enter work to get duration

Hello all,

I am trying to teach myself project. Thanks for any info that I recieve.

Is there any way to enter in work in hours and get the corresponding
duration before you assign a resource. Or due you have to always enter in the
duration, assign the resources to bring your time into your budget.

I have a bid with budgeted hours that I would like to enter into project to
track. I am thinking that I have to enter in the duration as the budgeted
hours then assign resources. What I would like to do is enter in the budgeted
hours into the work column.

Thanks,

Andre

Hello Andre,

You can create the task and leave the duration at the default of "1day?"
Then create the resource and when you assign the resource to the task,
enter the work. Project will recalculate the duration of the task based
upon the formula:

Work/Unit = Duration.

By default Project will assign the resource at his/her maximum unit that
you set in the Resource Sheet when you created the resource. Without
resource assigned however, entering work will not calculate duration for
you. You may find working with the Task Form at the bottom of the
screen is very useful as you get to manipulate all three pieces of the
relationship. From the Gantt chart view choose Window > Split in the
menu to display the Task form.

As you are new to project, I suggest taking a read of fellow MVP Mike
Glen's excellent series of articles on MS Project. You can find the

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

I agree with your comments almost 100% with just a couple of exceptions...

Date Constraints: Generally as you suggest, certainly would agree never to
use MFNLT and absolutely can't even imagine a legitimate use for MSO or MFO,
but consider the two tasks, Assemble A and Paint A. Assembly starts 1 Sep
and last 5 days. So Paint A can begin on 6 Sep. BUT the paint to be used
is on back-order and won't be delivered until 1 Oct. That, to me seems a
perfect use for the MSNE constraint to force the 2nd task to be scheduled
later than the links or resource availability would otherwise place it, yet
not with a fixed-length delay interval between predecessor and successor.

Other Than FS Links: We're scheduling a conference and the awards dinner is
to start 2 hours after the last afternoon session. Normal FS link with a
lag. But the keynote speech needs to be scheduled to start 1 hour after the
meal service is complete - if the dinner starts at 6 the speech starts at 7
but if the meeting runs long and the start of dinner service is pushed back
to 7, the speech needs to push back to 8. Start-Start link with a lag.
