Entering Actuals for Generic Resources?

C

Chris

Hi there

The Organisation where i work uses Timesheets & Managed Periods.
Where a Task in a plan will be done by an external resource i enter the
duration and allocate it to the resource. In these circumstances the
Resource i allocate the task to is set as a Generic Resource.

These Generic Resources will never fill a timesheet in however as the
Project Manager i would like to record when the task started, finished and if
it 100 % complete - therefore providing a simple record. I will never know
what hours on what days were spent on the task so do not want to enter
actuals via the timesheet.

When ever i enter start & end date and % complete i am told that it will be
overwritten when synching with actuals from the tmiesheet!

Can anyone advise how i can achieve this or point out where i am going wrong.

Hello Chris -

My personal opinion is that you are not using Generic Resources
correctly - using the example you cite, I would use a Local Resource -
just be sure to set the Workgroup value to "None." With the local
resource, you should be able to use the Update Tasks tool to set actual
start and finish and % Complete.

Hope this helps,

Hello Mark

Thanks for your quick reply. I have made the change you suggested. However
when i enter the actual start date and 100 % complete i am still told my
action may result in actuals in the project coming out of synch with actuals
from the timesheets.

Any other ideas?

Regards
