Entering effort on fixed unit task changes resource units

When I enter the work for a task (set to Fixed Units), the duration (which is
defaulted to 1 day?) doesn't change. When I select a resource to assign to
the task, the duration still remains the same and the resource units change
(eg. if I enter 4 hours work, the duration remains as '1 day?' but the
resource shows "Resource name[50%]".

If I then re-select the resource for the task, the duration changes to 0.5
days as expected.

Alternatively, if I select the resource first, then enter the work, the
duration changes correctly to 0.5 days and the resource units remain at 100%.

Can anyone explain why this happens? I want to be able to enter the
estimated effort for all the tasks before I assigne resources but I don't
seem to be able to.

Please note that the default task Type for the project is Fixed Units.

Peter-

Project will calculate the third field based on your entires in two of the
fields. So If I enter work and duration, then assign a resource, project
will assign that resource at the correct %. If I enter duration and assign a
resorce, then project will calcualate the work to be done. And if I enter the
work and assign the resource, Project will tell me how long(duration) the
task will take to complete. Hope this helps.
