entering fractions as text

How do I enter a fraction as text, and make it appear as
a fraction.

For instance, rather than typing 1/4, and having it
appear as three characters: 1, /, & 4; how do I have it
appear as a single character?

Thanks for the help.

Jim,

Hold down the Alt key and enter 0188 on the key pad to the right of the
keyboard.
