Entering text box - couple of squiggles always there

Its odd - just started to appear - whenever I open a new text box, there are
already a couple of strange squiggles already there that I can't delete.
Anyone have an answer ?

Does it look like this: ¤ ? Turn off special characters ( ¶ ) on the toolbar.
