Entering Time in an Excel Spreadsheet

I am very keypad oriented and wish to enter the time of
day in the form of hh.mm rather than the traditional hh:mm

How do I format the cell to accept the period rather than
the : and still know that I mean the time of day.

I am using a 24 hour day format. Later I will ask Excel
to subtract the starting time from the ending time and
calculate the hours worked.
