Enterprise Global and Options Settings

Erik

Hi,
I am trying to confirm the following:

The Enterprise Global project has no effect on settings in
the MSP Options dialog. All global options settings are
persisted in the registry. The default settings for new
projects (even when connected to MSP via a Project Server
account) come from the registry.

The fact that you can check out the Enterprise Global
project, and set options for that project has lead to some
confusion as to what (if any) effect this will have. My
understanding is that this will have none.
Thanks,
Erik

You are absolutely correct that the Tools - Options settings in the
Enterprise Global have no effect on the Tools - Options settings on each
enterprise user of Microsoft Project Professional. In spite of what we
might have hoped, this is not the purpose of the Enterprise Global.

Instead, the Enterprise Global is intended to be your organization's library
of enterprise custom Views, Tables, Filters, Groups, Reports, Fields, etc.
Each time a project manager logs into Project Server through Microsoft
Project Professional, the following actions take place:

1. The user's Global.mpt file is opened in the background
2. The Enterprise Global is opened in the background
3. The two files are merged into a single Global file
4. If there is are same-named objects such as Views or Tables in both
Globals, the Enterprise Global object overwrites the Global.mpt object

The Enterprise Global is how you rapidly deploy enterprise custom objects to
all users in your Project Server environment. Because of this, I strongly
recommend that your company establish a standard naming convention for all
enterprise custom objects. For example, in our company we name all custom
objects using the prefix "_msPE" at the beginning of the name, such as
"_mePE Tracking Gantt" or "_msPE Entry". Hope this explanation helps.

Thanks again Dale. In truth, I would like to see an
option to "enforce" not only settings but also views,
tables, filters, etc to make sure that these enterprise
elements are always updated with the "official" version
whenever an enterprise project is opened. Maybe someday...
