Entire document autoformats

I am using Word 2002. Every time that I apply a text
attribute (Center, bold, etc.) to a paragraph the entire
document formats to that attribute and I have to undo the
edit change. It is infuriating and I cannot figure out why
it is doing this. I am intimately familiar with the
autoformat options and tabs. Nothing changes this problem.

It isn't autoformat. You have one or more styles that are marked to
"automatically update". See
