Entire document changes when I block change one word?

When I block a word or a phrase in Word, then bold, italicize or centre it,
the entire document follows suit. I have to to click on UNDO and then only
the part I selected remains changed. I work quickly and sometimes forget to
check my work and find that the document has all been changed as described.
Then I have to go back and changed it. Is this a glitch in my software [MS
Word 2000 P] or should I reinstall again?
