Entire office will not work

J

Josie

Version: v.X
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

I installed Office for mac 10.0 on a new Imac. It worked fine for 40 days. Now when I open any of the office products, it goes to the gallery and then quits with the standard quit message asking me if I want to relaunch. I have loaded new system and reloaded office with no success. I set up a new user and it worked for 20 minutes and then it behaves the same as in the old user. Any ideas?

Did you *update* it after installing? Version 10.0 is arcane & out of step
with the level of OS X you're running it on (Office X was a migration from
the earlier Mac Classic OS written for OS X 10.1 - Puma).

If you apply the 10.1.9 update you'll [probably] get better results,
although I don't have any experience with Office X in Leopard:

I completed all of the steps that you suggested. My problem still exists. All of the office suite reacts the same way. Could this be a type of virus or other infection? This computer did a lot of downloading the last several weeks. If so, what is the best virus protection for incoming e-mails and downloads.

Although not *impossible* it is highly unlikely that a virus would be the
issue. That doesn't rule out the possibility that something included in the
downloading that was done might be interfering with the operation of the
Office apps - add-ins are definitely known to cause that type of behavior.
That would be one of the first things to check for - especially any
"utilities", "helpers" or "haxies" that run automatically.

Also, if you're using the Leopard feature called Spaces turn that off...
Office 2008 doesn't yet work properly with it so there's no telling what
might happen with Office X:) Since the new account behaved correctly then
stopped doing so it does suggest something external of Office that's causing
the problem.

Try running Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions, restart the iMac. If
that doesn't resolve it try launching Word while holding the Shift key.

Post back with your results & any additional details you find.

Thank you for your response.
Spaces is unabled
I did Repair Disk Permissions and restarted
I started Word with shift key down. It still quit. When I view the report it states, "EXC_BAD_ACCESS" and "KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at ........"
I have no idea what any of that would mean.
I do not know how to check for "helpers" or "haxies"

I am thinking I should back of the files and do a initializing of the hard drive and load the system from scratch. What do you think?

I wouldn't do that just right yet, I think the cure is simpler than that.

Try this: when you installed Word 2008, it imported some settings from Word
2004, and I wish it hadn't, because that's what is causing this problem.

Please:

1) Quit all Microsoft applications.

2) Track down all instances of pre-2008 Normal template on your computer,
and drag them to your desktop. The file is called simply "Normal" and has
no extension.

3) Find and drag the file Normal.dotm to your desktop. Unless you have
moved it, it should be in
/Users/ ~ /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/

4) If the following files exist, Remove or rename them:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (11)

User/Library/Preferences/com.Microsoft.Word.plist

User/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008 (the whole folder!)

5) Now re-start Word 2008 and it should be OK.

Be thorough with this, if you leave any of these files behind Word 2008 will
find them and won't replace them. Do it right and Word will construct a
new, clean, set of preferences and everything should now work.

Hope this helps, if not, come back :)

Thank you for your response.

You missed the first post, John - she's installed Office X, not 2008.
Unfortunately she's also erroneously followed the suggestions in my reply to
*someone else* [Larry Tackman] who hijacked this thread with a 2008 issue.

Hi Josie -

Despite the fact that John mistook your situation he's still quite right
about one point - your "initializing..." thought is *way* premature. That's
like replacing a leg with an artificial limb to cure a bunion:)

Secondly, please disregard my reply to Larry Tackman who interjected a
totally unrelated post into *your* thread. Go back to my reply to your
original message & follow the suggestions there. If that doesn't resolve it
post back with details on how you previously went about "I have loaded new
system and reloaded office with no success." as that may have compounded the
problem. If there was trouble prior to that we need the specifics as best
you can remember.

Good morning. I will try to sum up the situation. I have an Imac with the intel chip running OS 10.5.2. I installed Office v.X 10.0 and successfully used it for a month and a half. All office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Entourage) started quitting on loading when the gallery screen showed up. I reinstalled OS 10.5 from disks provided with the computer and updated to 10.5.2 from the apple site downloads. I also reinstalled Office 10.0 from the original disk. None of this worked.
I then posted on this site for help. I update Office 10.0 to 10.1.9 as you suggested. This did not solve the problem.

Hi Josie -

Thanks for the capsulation... It helps put the focus back on your
situation:) We're encouraging some changes in the web site to help
discourage interjections of disparate issues within a thread.

What I see no indication of in your post is the use of Apple's Disk Utility
application to Repair Disk Permissions since applying the 10.1.9 update. Try
doing that followed by a restart of your Mac. If that doesn't correct it...

Did you ever have the MS Office 2004 Test Drive (free trial) on that system?

When you reinstalled Office X this last time did you run the Remove Office
utility beforehand or did you just reinstall the software?

What happens if you hold Shift while launching Word?

Hi Josie:

Yeah, we know where you are now... Bob is correct: Larry pushed in on your
thread and confused the hell out of me. The instructions I sent you do not
apply to your version of Office.

In his original post, Bob suggested:
If you continue to have problems you may find the following helpful:

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/TroubleshootingIndex.html

That's your next step. The suggestions there need to be followed in order,
the sequence is important.

Re-installing is never going to work unless you do a "Remove Office" as
described on that website.

Cheers

Good Day, I have done the following:
1. I removed Office using the installation disk
2. I then reinstalled Office 10.0
3. I then download the update to 10.1.9 and installed
4. I then used the Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions
5. I restarted
6. Word quit as usual
7. I tried to open Word with the shift key down. It quit
8. I do not have MS Office 2004 test drive on my computer
Any other ideas or suggestions?

Hi Josie:

No other suggestions, I am afraid. I suspect Office vX is just not going to
work on OS 10.5.2 on your computer.

There are various programs that can set up conflicts that will crash Word X.
Are you running any software that is not made by either Apple or Microsoft?

Sorry

Thank you both for you time. I have initialized the disk and reloaded the OS. I have reloaded Office 10.0. Everything works as it should. Thanks again.

No, WE thank you. And "Sorry". Our fixes should have repaired it for you
without having to replace the operating system :)
