Try whether this helps:

In case of Word 2007:
Office button > Word Options > Proofing category > AutoCorrect Options
button (top right in the dialog box) > AutoFormat as You Type tab. Turn off
“Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspacesâ€.

In case of Word 2003:
Select Tools > AutoCorrect Options > "AutoFormat As You Type" tab and turn
off "Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces".

Hi Lene,

That option is already uncheck when i go to that option.
The problem still there..

Is there any other workaround?

thanks.

I am wondering whether it could be that the function of the Tab key has been
changed by a macro or an add-in. Do you have any macros installed? Do you
have any add-ins installed? Currently loaded add-ins are listed in Tools >
Templates and Add-Ins.

Hi Lene,

nope, no add in install at all.
is there a way to reset the formatting to default and does it help if i do
that?

Unfortunately, I have no other ideas…

It does not harm to try to restore the defaults to find out whether it helps.

Most settings will be restored if you follow the two steps below:

1. Exit Word. Find Normal.dot and rename it to e.g. NormalOLD.dot to force
Word to create a new Normal.dot. If this does not make any difference, you
can revert to the old Normal.dot afterwards.

You can find the exact location of Normal.dot via Tools > Options > File
Locations tab. Check the setting for “User templatesâ€.

2 Rename the Word Data key in the registry. It is located here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word

For details about what the Data key stores, see:
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/DataKeySettings.htm

If that does not make any difference, you can revert to the old to Data key
again.
