Entourage 2004(1.1.1) won't run on Tiger

Most users seem to have no Tiger problems. Good that my problem is
unusual, as Entourage hangs prevents using Tiger:

1 - As soon as I do anything after launch in Entourage it
hangs/beachball - I have to force quit both Entourage and the Microsoft
Error Reporter.

2 - Verify database reports corruption - rebuild database, go to
step#1, repeat

Prep for Tiger install included repair permissions, and diskwarrior
clean run. Tiger installed by Archive/Install.

I have a duplicate volume running OS 10.3.9. When I boot from OS
10.3.9, connect Entourage to the exact same Office 2004 Identity - no
problems.

Any suggestions much appreciated!

This is an update to my original post after installing OS 10.4.1 and further
debugging...

1 - Configuration:

OS 10.4.1 (update didn't resolve the bug)

Office 11.1.1 (latest)

2 - As soon as I do anything after launch in Entourage, e.g., just choose
Entourage/About --> hang/beachball - I have to force quit both Entourage and
the Microsoft Error Reporter.

3 - The database is not corrupted, this occurs with an empty new identity.

4 - Prep for Tiger upgrade from 10.3.9 included repair permissions, and
diskwarrior clean run. Tiger was installed by Archive/Install.

5 - I have a duplicate volume running OS 10.3.9. When I boot from OS
10.3.9, connect Entourage to the **exact same Office 2004 Identity** - no
problems.

6 - I've also tried removing the entire ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
folder.

Did you try reading any of the posts on this board? There are at least two
documented Tiger problems affecting a number of people here.

Anyhow, one known issue and fix:

Problem: Entourage slows down and beachballs constantly
Diagnosis: Spotlight is trying to index the database, but it can't
Fix: in spotlight preferences, click Privacy and tell spotlight NOT to try
to index username/documents/ms user data/main identity folder (assuming you
have not renamed your identity.

Are you aware you can search the archives at google:

If the above doesn't help, you might want to try some intensive searching.

I have had similar problems and have been in contact with Microsoft.
As you can see, their suggestion was to roll back to Panther and seek a
refund from Apple! Incredible . . . .
Re: Getting the beachball when trying to receive email

You can try updating your 10.4 software by going to the software update on
your operating system. If that does not work you can roll back to your
previous operating system by calling Apple. They will be able to help you
with that. Since Tiger is an operating system update, you will have to call
Apple for a refund.

Please let me know if this addresses your issue.

After you respond by posting a supplement to this case, you will receive a
response as quickly as possible. If you do not reply within 2 business days,
we will assume you no longer require assistance with this issue and your case
will be closed. The closed case will be reopened automatically should
you reply.

Thank you for using Microsoft Customer Support Services,

With help from others on this board, I have come up with a fix for
beachballing, which is as follows:

1. Exclude specific identity folders from being searched by Spotlight
(under spotlight system preferences > privacy)

2. Under Entourage preferences > security, uncheck the box for
displaying HTML emails. Everything works for me in text mode, but as
soon as I switch to HTML and click on an HTML email, program beachballs
and crashes.

Good luck. Try inundating Microsoft with demands for a fix. We paid
good money for their software and they should be able to work a fix
rather than suggesting we go backwards in OS!

The checkbox says "Display complex HTML in messages"... Does that mean it
will display simple HTML, like when my friends email me and they type a
regular message but do it in HTML, not text...?

Yes it will display "simple HTML" with formatted text, backgrounds, inserted
graphics files, etc. There are just two things that the regular Entourage
display can't handle on its own - tables, and links to websites (which is
what a lot of the incorporated graphics you see in HTML messages from
commercial sites and spam are, and which can conceal links that "snoop").
Almost anything sent by a friend via most email clients (especially
Entourage, Outlook Express Windows, Outlook) will be OK. Netscape and
Thunderbird might be sending complex HTML, that calls on the Tasman
rendering engine and sets off some of these problems. By selecting that
option, you'd get these messages, only, in plain text instead.
