Entourage 2004 and Exchange 2003 very Slow

We have Exchange 2003 and 1 client running Entourage 2004. The size
of the database is 16GB and it is extremely slow. It seems like
Entourage keep refreshing itself and it is "thinking" every other
minute. The pointer turns to the "running circle" every other
minute. When it happens, Entourage seems stop responding and become
unusable. When the pointer comes back, Entourage responses fast
again. However, we are talking about this situation kept happening
every other minute. This make Entourage almost useless.

Please advice.
