Entourage 2004 + Exchange: cannot send email or see delegate server

Colin Hunter

I'm testing Entourage 2004, prior to upgrading the rest of our office
running OSX 10.3.4 and Entourage X.

Manually configuring an Exchange account with my account details, the
Exchange server domain, webserver address, etc I am able to see
everything in my Inbox, Drafts, Sent Items, etc. I can also receive
new, incoming mail and the address book and calendar are also working
perfectly. However, if I try to send anything I get "HTTP error. The
server cannot fulfill the request."

The second problem is with delegate access. I've set up a couple of
test accounts with delegate access to the calendar, but when I choose
"Add" in the Delegate tab of my account settings and try to enter the
user name, I get "There was an error communicating with the directory
server."

Our IT people are wiling to help, but they have no Mac experience.
Anybody got any pointers where the problem may lie?

Thanks,

This generally means your e-mail address is not typed correctly in your
Exchange account, or at least not exactly how the server is expecting it to
be.

This could be a symptom of the first problem.

You were correct - I had my preferred reply-to address in the email
address field. Changing it to the Outlook email address now allows me
to send from the account. Many thanks for the pointer.

Unfortunately no. I still get "There was an error communicating with
the directory server." The directory server works fine for searching
the GAL, any ideas why I'm getting this message when I try to add
delegates?

I don't have any further insights on this one. Did you try doing the same
thing on Win Outlook? That will tell you for sure if the delegate
permissions are configured correctly.

I just tried adding the test delegate account in Windows Outlook client
as you suggested and it came right up, with the correct access
privileges. There must be something unique to Entourage accessing the
server to add delegates, that doesn't apply to any other function. I
appreciate your help with the problem sending email - what are my
resources for solving my delegate server access problem?

Thanks.

I too have had similar problems. Have managed to add delegates to the folders list from the Exchange server, but Entourage does not display the folder lists for those delegates, show calendar items or allow email to be sent on behalf of a delegate, even though all the correct privilages are set.

Delegates in the folders list apear as 'Name - Exchange Account (Not connected).

Any thoughts?

I posted a partial fix that I discovered with my system. Search for delegate
in the newsgroup and you'll see it. The problem has to do with Exchange 2003
in a Small Business Server environment, at least in my situation.

I wish Microsoft would acknowledge this problem and fix it right away!

My problem is more basic as Entourage refuses to even add any
delegates. I click on the "Delegate" tab in Edit Account, click the
"Add" button, enter the user name and click "OK", then I just get a
"There was an error communicating with the directory server". I have
no idea what's causing the problem, and the error message gives no
information.

I dunno. It doesn't work well enough for me because I get a bunch of
synchronization errors when it trys to talk back to the Exchange server so I
don't use it yet. However, I'd REALLY like for this to work properly.

So, maybe a Microsoft MacBU person monitoring this forum would like to speak
up and at least acknowledge that many people are complaining about this
problem and they need to look into it?????

Microsoft????
