entourage 2004 for mac - error -16999

Hi

Entourage was working fine until a couple of days ago when I started
getting the following error message whenever I tried to receive
emails:

"Error - problem retrieving message.
Explanation - could not retrieve mail.
Account name: "[my account name]"

Error: -16999"

I tried fixing it by selecting "always use secure password" in the
advanced receiving options, but then i get the error message -17897
instead.

Please help. Thank you.

First, uncheck the "Always use secure password" option in your account
settings. Apparently that wasn't the issue.

Download and install the latest Office 2004 update, which is the Office 2004
11.3.5 update.

In Office 2004, use Microsoft AutoUpdate to get the latest updates. From
any Office application, go to Help > Check for Updates (or manually launch
Microsoft AutoUpdate from the Applications folder). If any updates are
needed, they will display in a sheet, at which point you can check them and
press the "Install" button to download and install them.

If that doesn't work, try opening your e-mail account(s) using a webmail
interface. Go to the oldest messages, and delete any junk mail. Sometimes
incorrectly formatted messages, often junk, keep Entourage from being able
to receive all of the messages. Then, try receiving mail in Entourage
again.

If you aren¹t traveling is it possible that your ISP has changed something?

If you are still having problems, try creating a new Identity in Entourage
and test your account. If you have problems in the new Identity, create a
new User in System Preferences and test there. If the problem is still
present, call your ISP. It¹s not your database or your computer settings.
