Entourage 2004 forces windowserver restart when inputting text

G

Guest

This problem started immediately after I upgraded from Tiger to Snow
Leopard. When entering text into the body of a message (email or news
posting), or subject line, or email address line, or address book, Entourage
"crashes". The screen turns light blue for a second, then displays the
logon screen. Of course, when I logon again, all previously open programs
have been closed and any unsaved work lost.

This is happening about 10 - 20 times per week and tends to occur in bunches
of about 4 or 5 times. For example, this happened 4 times while composing
this post.

Very frustrating. Any ideas on what is happening and how to fix this?

Excerpts from the system diagnostic report and the windowserver log are
includes at the end of this post.

This sounds more like your upgrade didn't go very well. Simply typing
something into Entourage should have nothing to do with your WindowServer.

One thing I am noticing in what you posted is that even though you're
experiencing this problem repeatedly, you're not restarting your
machine. The error report says you've been logged in nearly two days.
Whenever you have problems like this, the first thing to do is restart
to put your machine back into a known stable state. Then proceed to test
further.

At this point, I don't know whether or not a new install of Mac OS X
10.6.1 (not an upgrade) plus a new install of Office 2004 is in order.
This is what I would do, however.

For you, I suggest starting with Disk Utility to make sure permissions
are correct and to verify your disk. You might also reapply the Mac OS X
10.6.1 update. If you have a disk utility such as DiskWarrior then by
all means run it to see if you have something deeper causing your
problem. AppleCare customers can go to <http://www.apple.com/support>,
enter their serial number and download a free copy of TechTools Deluxe.
Finally, make sure Office 2004 is fully up to date.

If none of this works, then reinstall your Mac OS from scratch and
reinstall your Office 2004 from scratch.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, Bill.

I see that a OS X 10.6.2 has been released. It claims to resolve "an issue
that might cause your system to logout unexpectedly". I'm going to try that
upgrade first before I try your ideas and advice.
