Entourage 2004 spelling preference

I have an Mac G5 running OS 10.4.8 and MS Office x with Entourage 2004
11.3.3.
When I bring up the Entourage Preference panel and select Spelling, a
page
of options comes up with no options checked. If I check the box for
Check
spelling as you type (and/or any of the other options), then click OK
I
would expect the checked options to take effect. They don't. If I
reopen
the Preferences panel and click Spelling, it again brings of the page
of
unchecked options. None of the other General Preferences behave this
way,
i.e., once an option is checked, it stays checked. I tried
quitting/reopening Entourage and I tried rebooting, all to no avail.

I have not tried to reinstall Entourage 2004, hoping that would be
unnecessary.

I would certainly appreciate any help in understanding and resolving
this
problem. Thank you.

This sounds like a permissions problem. Test Entourage in a new User. Go to
System Preferences and create a new User. Open Entourage and see if the
preferences stick there. If yes, then compare permissions in your User's
Library folder to those in the new User.

Two things to try. First would be to repair permissions via Disk Utility. A
permission that is set wrong may not allow you to change a preference. Try
to change a spelling setting and see if it sticks.

Second would be to move the preference file for entourage out of its
location (save it somewhere just in case) then restart entourage to allow it
to regenerate the preference file. Now try to change a spelling setting. If
you can change it, you have a corrupted pref file and will need to work with
the new one.

Pref file location is at:

~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Entourage.plist
