Entourage 2004 sync issue with Exchange 2003 server

M

marcus.haensel

I am desparately trying to setup Entourage 2004 to work properly with
our corporate exchange 2003 mailserver. By using the OWA-URL as server
and the active directory account as account, I managed to connect (on
the first sight) properly to the server. I can see all mails and
calendar entries and can send as well.

Only issue, but this is getting serious: mails sent from the Entourage-
client are not stored on the server (although sent properly). As well,
calendar entries are not stored on the server. This comes to an issue
as the mailbox is delegated to a secretary and accessed as well from a
blackberry. Entourage continously writes in the report log that he is
unable to sync the different documents with the Exchange server (error
-18596).

I have googled this topic extensively but found no working solution.
Latest update to 11.3.5 has been applied today to Outlook 2004
(although Entourage still shows 11.3.3)

If anybody could help, I would be grateful!
Many thanks
Marcus

Hi Marcus!

I recall this issue when we experienced it and I believe it was resolved
by one of the Exchange Server updates several months (maybe a year?)
ago. Ask your Exchange Server admins if their servers are fully patched.
Ask again if they say the servers are fully patched.

This problem only happens when connecting via an OWA address. If you're
inside your company network use your Exchange Server's name or IP
address instead.

Hope this helps! bill

Hi Bill,
thanks for the quick answer. I'll recheck with the admins but do not
put much hope in it. I am operating in an "hostile" windows
environment (also for clients). Macs are not supported thus no action
will result from problems Macs have.

Anyhow, I would already be happy to solve this issue out when being
inside the LAN. Indeed the exact naming of the server seems to me the
real issue. I have seen hints to add the email-address and so on, but
nothing had worked.

When using the name of the server where the mailbox is actually
located, could you specify exactly how you do it? Full qualified, ...?

Hi Marcus!

The fully qualified domain name or the server's IP address should be
sufficient. Being internal, you shouldn't need to use SSL or any special
port assignments.

If you have access to Outlook then access your account through Outlook
and while it is open a.) hold the Control key while you b.) right-click
the Outlook icon in the System Tray near the clock. Select the server
status item from the contextual menu and you'll see the names of all
your servers.

Hope this helps! bill

Hi Bill,
unfortunately, it did not work. I think I have tried now every
possible way you could enter the server in the account-options.
Anyhow, the sync-issue (error -18596) still occurs and prevents
reliable mailing and calendaring. By the way, your hint concerning the
servers worked fine, but I do not get any connection when entering
these servers instead of the OWA-server.

Thanks again for your help so far. If you or anybody else have/has
another idea, it is still welcome.

Best regards,
Marcus

Hi Bill,

Great tip on how to see the Exchange server name I XP for Mac Users. I
went thru all sorts of trial and error to figure that out a year or so ago.
D'oh!

Along those same lines, I have never been able to get MSN Messenger to
work over SSH that I use for Exchange via Entourage when on the road. The
auto config option works in the office though. Any hints on how to find out
similar server name info for Messenger? I do have access to an XP account
view.

Cheers,
Kevin

Hi Marcus!

You may need to play with the SSL settings. Typically, you won't enable
SSL but in some cases you may need to. And be sure you're not prefixing
the servers with anything like "http://" or "https://". Internal server
names should just be "server.domain.com".

Can you connect to your account via Outlook Web Access (OWA)? If so,
connect and copy/paste that address string into your Entourage Exchange
Server field.

Hope this helps! bill

Hi Kevin!

I've never had a need to check but I'll see if I find something at work
and let you know if I find something.

Hi Kevin!

At work we're using Office Communicator and if I go into Tools -->
Options (I believe, but definitely under Tools) then I can view various
preference tabs. One of these is for my account settings and shows my
server, which was pre-configured for me. Not sure if this is what you're
looking for though.
