Entourage 2004 very slow changing views

Entourage 2004 on my Mac is extremely slow changing views, searches,
folders etc. most likely because I have a 20GB user database. at least a
15-20 second lag trying to change views.

Was this way on my G5 and the same on my new Xeon quad core.
Memory/processor speed has nothing to do with it.

How can I trim some of the bloat to speed things up?
Is there a better way to do it?

TIA

Check out the options here:

Archive Your Data

If you are interested in seeing how your 20GB db falls in a poll on size of
db see:

LOL, I'm in the tiny 4.2% "other"

The ideal solution, would be the ability to archive in incremental
chunks to get rid of some of the older stuff.

(Question, why hasn't MS ever thought of this?)

I do periodically go back a year or so, and I have several years.

I think MS only gives me the option of creating another identity, and
then toggling back when I need to, cutting & pasting emails.

The problem with this inelegant solution is that anything from the past
couple weeks will be tedious to manage and the process is not very
efficient.

Thanks for getting back. I may have to live with this problem until
there are better solutions.

Archive all but the last 18 months. You can store the older messages in a
separate Identity in Entourage or import them into Apple Mail and you can
search there without having to quit Entourage.

I suggest you put your Sent messages into folder by year. Inbox too if you
keep a lot in your Inbox. Then run the export as MBOX script and you¹ll have
a safe backup of older data.

Export folders as MBOX files (includes subfolders)

Thanks Diane,

This will be Workable! Will this change the size of my user data down to
a smaller size, or is this irrelative for determining the speed of how
fast folder views open after having archived?

You can compress your database using the Database Utility. To see what
actual wasted space you have export all items as .rge file. Compare the size
of the .rge and the database. The difference is wasted space. A little is OK
since Entourage reuses it, but if it¹s several GB then definitely compress.

Always make a backup first.
