Entourage 2004 w/ exchange frequently pauses

M

Mark Surfas

I have a new installation of entourage running against my exchange server
and I am suffering from highly frequent pausing in when using email,
calendar, etc.

I'll be typing email, browsing the calendar, or any other useful task and
the colored spinning "please wait" disk will appear for 5 to 10 seconds.
This happens once every 2 to 3 minutes or so.

Ideas?

Are you running Tiger? If so, maybe Spotlight is trying to index your mail
database. If so, try telling Spotlight not to index your Microsoft User
Data folder. To do that, utilize the Privacy tab of the Spotlight
preferences.

We have the same problem - OSX, not tiger (So no spotlight??) - and my
user's spinnin' ball is spinnin' all day, she barely gets through.
She's using OWA instead, until we can get it fixed.

Any other ideas besides spotlight??

The MVPs here do a grand job of suggesting workarounds, positing
thoughts on why E2004 behaves in a certain way, even ruminating on when
the next bag (it had better be a big bag) of fixes is due.

But this pausing/pinwheel/beachball-of-death problem seems to resist
any analysis and troubleshooting. I think it's just bad software and a
fix is on the way, hopefully.

You may have your own experiences, but here (with 250+ Mac clients out
of a total of 800 Exchange clients) we can't find any consistency with
this particular E2004 problem. Essentially we have identical builds of
the software out there, but you can have one E2004 user with the
spinning beachball and another will be working happily. We're
currently investigating whether changing the ratios of Mac-to-Windows
clients, on the Exchange mailstores, has an effect... will post our
findings.

Our CEO has got the same problem. Would reinstallation of entourage
help? Any other work arounds that could be looked into?
