Entourage 2008 and Identity issues in OSX 10.6.1

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: Exchange

I've been having trouble with Mac Office 2008 applications (sudden shutdowns, lack of searching capability in Entourage) since upgrading to OSX 10.6 then 10.6.1 this week. Going on a hunch that reinstalling Office 2008 (I think v. 12.0.0) might help things, I did that but got an error "There is a problem with the office database, etc." which sent me to the Microsoft Database Utility to rebuild the database—I got a successful rebuild message, but then when checked again the utility told me the database was still corrupt. As a result, I cannot open Entourage at all because "This identity can't be opened with this version of Entourage." Also, I can't install the SP1 12.0.1 or the latest version of Entourage (Web services) because the installer program will not recognize my hard disk as capable for the install. Word seems to work OK, but Entourage is out of service. Sorry for the long post, but does anyone have a suggestion about where I go from here? Thank you in advance !

try setting the Entourage and database performances aside. They might be
corrupted and triggering this.

Corentin,
Thanks for the quick reply, but I don't know what you mean by "setting the Entourage and database performances aside."

Corentin, Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply, but I don't know what you mean by "setting

Well you locate the preferences in ~/Library/Preferences (the
com.microsoft ones and anything relevant in the Microsoft subfolder) and
you drag them to the desktop,

I removed the new, problematical Identity database that was causing Entourage to fail to load, and put back the old, backed-up one. Now, Entourage (on my Mac Mini, which is the computer in question) opens successfully, but I can't get it to connect to my university's Exchange server (I'm working off-campus). I have another Mac (Macbook Pro, running OSX 10.5) and Entourage on that one connects to the Exchange server just fine. I did try to remove the Entourage preferences file to the desktop as you suggested, but that didn't make any difference to the connection. All the account settings, server addresses, username and password, etc., on the Mini are identical to the ones on the Macbook Pro. I'm wondering where the problem is. Before I reinstalled Office 2008 Entourage was running successfully on the Mini.

Either the account settings are different, or it's the network settings
(eg: different DNS, etc).
If you were able to connect before, it's likely the account settings.

These preferneces do not affect account settings at all. They're for
sync services, spotlight, colorizing incoming messages, (the database
checkup) etc.

well I would still triple check even the tiniest detail. A very minor
difference could prevent the connection.
