Entourage 2008 compatibility with office 2004

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I work with mail2web.com Business Exchange which provided me with a free download of Entourage 2008. I had to update to sp2 and then web services edition and this was working fine. I had no other office apps on my laptop.

I subsequently downloaded Office for mac 2004 and now Entourage won't open saying 'this identity cannot be opened with this version of entourage.'

There was also an error with my database utility. Scan log as follows:
======================
Starting Scan
====================

ERROR: Failed to open database [Head]
ERROR: Corruption opening database [16003:""]
======================
Scan Ended
====================

I then tried to redownload and install the Entourage 2008 from my mail2web site again and this seemed to succeed. It also appeared to update all the office suite applications to 2008. I then tried to download the updates manually from mactopia but sp1 could not be installed at the 'select destination' stage: "Office 2008 Sp1 Update (12.1.0) can't be installed on this disk. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume".

I suspect that I cannot now update the entourage application to 2008 independently of the rest of the suite.

I would like to try to retain my entourage 2008 identity that I had previously been using but at the same time I do not to open up a whole can of worms / bugs by messing around too much. Does anyone have any ideas or should I just uninstall all and reinstall office 2004 and start afresh with entourage 2004 + new identity?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Entourage 204 and 2008 use different database formats. That¹ why 204 said it
could not work with your 2008 identity. If you install Office 2004 you will
not be able to work with mail2web. On a second issue is where did you
download Office 2004. To my knowledge it is not downloadable. I think your
best bet is to completely uninstall Office 2004 using the remove Office
utility. Then decide whether you need mail2web or not. If not, install
Office 2004. If you do, install office 2008 and get the updates you need.
