Entourage 2008 Corrupts Attachments

J

Jeff Barrett

The pdf's I attach to my Entourage e-mails are corrupt when the recipient
tries to open them.

I am running:

iMac w/ latest version of Leopard.
Entourage 2008
Mailstreet hosted Exchange

When recipients try to open the attachment it says, "cannot open file
corrupt." I send a lot of pdf's so it is mostly on them. I've tried all the
various attachment methods on Entourage with no success.

Does not happen in Entourage 2004. So thats what I am using now.
Does not happen in Mac Mail
Does not happen when sent directly via Mailstreet web mail

I have gone back to Entrouage 2004 but would like to use 2008.

Please help!

Hi Jeff!

The problem may as well be on the recipient's end.

What happens when you send to yourself? What is their E-mail client?
What is the average size of your attachments?

When I send it to myself it opens fine.

50% of the people I send to are using the same Mailstreet hosted exchange
but are running Dels with Microsoft Outlook 2008. The other half have been
people in various states and countries so it would surprise me if it was
their issue.

The average size of the files are under 1 meg.

I was running 2004 and then upgraded to 2008. The problem started shortly
thereafter. I went back to 2004 and it seems to be ok. I would like to be on
2008.

Hi Jeff!

If the attachments reach half the people but not others then this really
sounds like problems with your recipients. However, that doesn't mean
you can't try to do something about this.

While you shouldn't have to zip your attachments you might try doing
that prior to sending. Before trying that test whether or not changing
your encoding method for attachments makes a difference. You can do this
under Entourage --> Preferences... --> Mail & News Preferences... -->
Compose. Change it to either "Windows (MIME/Base64)" or "Any Computer
(AppleDouble)".

Hope this helps!

I disagree with your assessment that it is the receiving users
problem. I have also recently encountered this same problem and even
experienced it while sending a file to myself. The issue is an
Entourage issue and is unpredictable and intermittent. Even with the
correct settings sending the exact same file to the same individual
will produce different results. I had no trouble sending files to a
wide variety of recipients until I began using Entourage 2008.

I'm having exactly the same problem with exactly the same setup.
Although my Exchange is hosted with Fasthosts not Mailstreet. Michael
do you find that when you drag the pdf into the email attachments
window it loses it's pdf icon and turns to a generic document one?
This made me wonder whether it has something to do with Leopard's
system of changing the generic Adobe pdf icon into a preview icon of
the document? As you mention, the recipient can open it some of the
time but not always. Very frustrating!

Do you or some of your recipients perhaps have an account setting where an
email only gets partially downloaded from the server if the email exceeds a
particular size? If the attachment is not completely downloaded and you
attempt to open it, it will appear as though it is corrupted.

In Entourage, you can check such a setting at Entourage | Account Settings
then clicking on the Options tab of your account.

If any of you have an email with such a corrupted PDF attachment, would it
be possible to forward it to huchinATmicrosoftDOTcom please? Thanks!

You may have misunderstood my answer. If I have a problem with an attachment,
ALL the recipients have the problem. These recipients are all over the US and
Canada.

I'm having the same problem. I upgraded a user from Entourage 2004 to
2008, and now, if he sends an email with an attachment, the attachment
is delivered corrupt. This did not happen on the same user's laptop,
which was not an upgrade but a new installation. We use Microsoft
Exchange Server 2007. There are no problems sending the same
attachments from another computer (i.e. an Windows/Outlook
workstation).

Have you tried zipping them?

I'm assuming that his identity was upgraded from the Entourage 2004 identity
in the process...is that correct? Can you try creating a new identity for
him? If you need to manually move his data from the current identity, please
see the following...

Quoting from a previous post from Diane Ross on another thread:
How to manually move your data:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/manual_install.html>

If moving to a new identity doesn't help, can you please have the user send
me an email with an attachment directly to huchinATmicrosoftDOTcom (please
modify accordingly) so that I can investigate on my end? Thanks!

To other users with this same problem,

Did you all upgrade from an Entourage 2004 identity as well?

To other users with this same problem,

Did you all upgrade from an Entourage 2004 identity as well?

I did upgrade from 2004. I have another user here who also upgraded
from 2004 but has no problems with pdf attachments (she has a POP3
mailbox) although I'm starting to think this might have something to
do with how the pdf was created.

I've noticed that when I add the pdf to the attachments box in a new
message it loses the custom Adobe PDF icon and looks like a default
document. Actually I've just tested this further and if I add a pdf
created with Quark 6.52 and Distiller 8.0.0 it seems okay and the PDF
icon is retained but when I add one created by Quark 7.31 and
Distiller 8.1.0 it loses the icon.

If I send a pdf to myself I get the same problem my recipients are
getting but again it's not consistently corrupting the pdf.

What kind of pdfs is everyone else attaching that are being corrupted?
How have they been made and do they lose their icon when you attach
them?

H

Hui Nee Chin

When you say they're corrupted, does it mean they show up garbled in the
Preview Pane of the email or are you not able to open them up at all?

No, by corrupted I mean when you save the attachment to the desktop or
wherever and then try to open it Acrobat says "There was an error
opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired"

I also have the garbled pdf in the preview pane problem when I receive
"good" pdfs from clients but I believe this is a known issue. It's
doesn't happen with every pdf though and the pdf will open fine when I
save the file out and open it with acrobat.

We are currently investigating the issue related to garbled PDF in the
preview pane. As for corrupted PDFs...would it be possible to send me some
samples so that I can look into this? If that's ok, please drag the email
that contains the corrupted PDF attachment to your desktop and zip up the
email. Then attach the zip file to an email addressed to
huchinATmicrosoftDOTcom (please modify accordingly). Thanks!

Okay Hui, I will do later today.

I've also tried adding the pdf and selecting the option in Entourage
to compress the attachment as a zip file but even that turns out to be
corrupted when the recipient receives it.

Hi there,

I also have the garbled pdf in the preview pane problem when I receive
good, or high res full colour pdfs from friends and or clients but have not heard that it's a known issue.

It also for me doesn't happen with every pdf though and the pdf will open fine when I
save the file out and open it with acrobat.

Mine also opens fine straight from the email it'self but looks like "crap" in the bottom preview pane......

Can anyone help me?
