Entourage 2008 Crash: toolbar fried?

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC
Email Client: pop

I'm trying to run Entourage 2008 on my G4 under OSX 10.4.9. The icons meant to represent mail, calendar etc. are missing from the left side of my toolbar, though the text below them is there. Entourage crashes whenever I mouse over the missing icons. Any thoughts?

MORE: if I set the toolbar view to "text" only, the application stabilizes, so it looks like "icon and text" is driving the problem

Unfortunately neither the new identity or the database rebuild fixed the problem. From a quick glance through the internet, it looks like application crashes are very common with Office 2008. (Ex. My PowerPoint is bombing left and right as well.) Do you think I should just downgrade back to Office X?

No. I can't even remember the last time I crashed in Office 2008.

1) First thing we want to do is make sure you have a good base. Download the
combo updater from Apple and run it again rather than using Software Update.
Doing so overwrites potentially problem-causing files. Several users have
reported this fixed some odd problems they were having with Entourage. Combo
updaters will install on the same version as they¹re applying‹no need to
roll back or do a clean install.

Tiger:

Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (PPC)
<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html>

2) Our next step is to remove Office 2008 and re-install:

Drag Office 2008 to the trash and delete. Follow the directions here:

It's possible you might have to do an "Archive & Install" if you are still
having problems. Unless your system is compromised, the above should get you
working again.

Well, I did everything above except the "Archive and Install", including downloading the Office update released on 8/12 (12.1.2 ?) No progress, unfortunately. Mousing over the missing Entourage icons still crashes the application. I'm back to Office X and trying to decide if it's worth trying 2008 again after going the "A & I" route. Bummer. But, thanks for your help.

That's your option. No one else is having that problem so you might
consider that you do have problems on your computer. An "Archive & Install"
isn't bad. Do it!

Okay, I did it. Guess what? It worked! At least the icons have reappeared in Entourage. I'll let you know if anything else is still amiss, but acres of credit to you, my friend, acres of credit. Thanks!

Glad you are seeing progress. Keep us informed.
