Entourage 2008 + Exchange = Slow

"Now updating ..." doesn't really finish.

As a Litmus test, I've checked my mail in Outlook (under Win XP through VMWare)... updates quickly and let's me use the app. I am using a MacBook Pro:
Model Identifier: MacBookPro2,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.33 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 3 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz

Should be plenty fast, right? It doesn't matter if I run any other application, it still updating forever, so it doesn't appear to be a hardware issue. The Exchange server I'm connecting to is in house just over the network... should be no problem (as evident by using Outlook).

I have 3,459 messages in Exchange. I disabled notifications, not syncing with any services. It just won't let me type a message because the pinwheel won't stop spinning.

This sounds to me like you're using a front-end Outlook Web Access (OWA)
server address rather than a back-end Exchange Server address. Using a
back-end address over an OWA address should have much better performance.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your response. I'm definitely using the back-end Exchange Server. After a little more research, I believe it's because my mail in Exchange is in the MAPI format... and every time Entourage tries to update, it's going through and trying to convert it to another format. Doing that for 3400 emails makes it really really slow. Wish I hadn't wasted my time on Entourage if it can't support the MAPI format.

I've only heard of this issue a few times. It's not Entourage that's the
problem.

Your message store has probably been migrated from another server and it
was put into a MAPI format. You can still access the messages because
they are getting converted on the fly for you to be able to view them.
Hence, the latency.

I believe your administrator needs to convert your store back to MIME.

Hope this helps!
