Entourage 2008 makes me keep reentering POPpassword when I send mail

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

I consistently get the error message "Your username/password or security setting may be incorrect. Would you like to try reentering your password?" when I try to send email from one of my POP accounts - even though I have entered my password and POP settings correctly. (I have confirmed this both online and with phone support).

In other words, Entourage keeps forgetting that I've already entered my password (and requested the password to be saved in my keychain, as well), so I have to reenter it every time I send an email. Any suggestions for how to cure this annoying quirk? Thank you in advance for any assistance.

I followed the steps outlined above, but the password still isn't sticking, and Entourage is still asking me to re-enter my password after about a minute of unsuccessfully trying to send an email.

Next steps for troubleshooting..? Thank you.

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the
New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Open Entourage in a
new User. Enter account info and under the Options tab set to "leave on
server". Does the password stick in the new User? If yes, this indicates
problems in your User's account. If no, then see below.

If the problems existed in a new User then it could be your Office install
or the OS files. This does not seem like an Office problem. I would download
and install the latest combo over your current setup. Doing so overwrites
potentially problem-causing files. Combo updaters will install on the same
version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.

OK, I set up a new account via System Preferences. The problem occurred there as well.

I downloaded the combo updater and installed. Still experiencing the same problem. What are next steps...? Thank you...

Is your keychain locked? Do you have admin privileges?
