Entourage 2008 not syncing with Address Book

I just noticed that Entourage 2008 is not syncing with Address Book.
I'm running Tiger.

Syncing worked perfectly before and I suspect it stopped when I
upgraded to Entourage 2008. I checked all the settings and they haven't
changed.

Pardon what is probably a stupid question but do I need a .Mac account
to use Sync Services?
No!

I'm confused because I've never had a .Mac
account yet my Entourage 2004 contacts synced with Address Book before.
I have no memory of how I set that up in the first place.

Open Entourage preferences and select Sync Services. Check the options you
want.

Entourage Database Daemon (Office Notifications) must be turned on.
Spotlight will index any cache files the Entourage daemon has created even
if the daemon is not launched, but no new cache files will be created until
the daemon is launched again.

Is this really true. As one of several steps to get around Entourage
2008's terrible impact on performance of the rest of my system, I have
disabled office notifications. At least invoking the "synchronize
now" function seems to transfer events to my iMac calendar. However,
I have also had to set options to "Entourage overwrites MAC" (or
whatever it is called) since I do not trust Entourage not to duplicate
all my calendar events.

Two questions:

1. Am I confused about something?
2. WHEN is Microsoft likely to fix the duplicating event bug?

A third question might be "are there good alternatives to Entourage
that will still sync to our Exchange data base?", but I am skeptical
that Microsoft will be anxious to answer that one.

We are expecting SR1 shortly. Not sure what it will fix as MSFT never
announces beforehand.

It certainly hasn¹t fixed Sync Services for me. Address Book data erased,
4,5, 6, even 7 crashes of Sync Services over a couple of days, and
incomplete iCal information.

It makes using my iPhone with Entourage all but useless.

There is something going on and it appears to more than Entourage that is
causing the problem. I suggest running the combo updater to see if that
fixes your problem, but you might need to do an "Archive & Install".

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Entourage. Combo updaters will install on the
same version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.

Leopard:

Mac OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update (This update delivers several improvements for
both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs )

Tiger:

Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (PPC)

All but useless? GREAT!
