Entourage 2008 - Won' Receive Email From Exchange Without Restart App

Been using Entourage 2008 to get email from our corporate Exchange
server for a few months now without a problem. I often disconnect and
reconnect to the network later and leave Entourage running. Up until
recently when I reconnected, Entourage would check for new email and
pull it down automatically.

Suddenly things stopped working. Entourage still checks the Exchange
server when I reconnect to the network but it doesn't pull down any
new email. To receive new email after reconnecting to the corporate
lan, I have to close Entourage and re-open it... Huh?

I reset the cache on my Inbox but that didn't fix the problem. Neither
did blowing away the entire account and pulling down all my messages
(Inbox, Sent, etc.) from scratch.

Anybody else had this problem?

A faster workaround may be to use Entourage menu --> Work Offline and
then Work Online. Not sure if that will work but it may.

Are you using Kerberos authentication or are you using standard
authentication?

Hi Bill,

I'm using Kerberos. That's an interesting suggesting on switching to
working offline and then back online. This morning I tried switching
identities (even though I have just one). That worked as well but
really it seemed pretty much the same as exiting and restarting the
app. Although maybe something is wrong with my "identity" and I should
create a new one (insert joke here)?

Kerberos tickets have a default time limit of 10 hours before they must
be renewed. That times begins as soon as you log in the first time.

If you're doing something like closing your laptop when you leave work
(eight hours later) then your ticket will be expired the next morning.
You'll be forced to acquire a new ticket. The old one that Entourage is
using won't work any longer. That would explain why restarting Entourage
is necessary.

Hope this helps!

Ah. That makes sense. I recently had to recreate my Exchange account.
I set it to Kerberos when I recreated the account but before maybe it
wasn't Kerberos and therefore didn't time out like this. Is that
possible?

It is.
I've had issues with Kerberos Anthentication. Basically the ticket
expires and I don;t get any notification, and it fails to self-renew.

You can check the status of your Kerberos Ticket with
/System/Library/CoreServices/Kerberos

This application will display everything you need to know and can also
be used to force-renew the ticket.
