Paul
I have recently suffered the joy of a corrupt entity in my Entourage address
book that kept crashing my sync process to my palm.
I thought that I would post this problem and the fix, as this was a pain in
the Gluteus maximus region.
I found that after I had recently installed the update to Entourage & Office
10.0.4 I was no longer able to SYNC across to my palm m515.
I tried all the usual things.
1. Rebuild both typical and Atypical builds of the database.
2. Reinstalling the conduits and Palm software.
3. Reinstalling the Office software.
none of this worked and a good period of time and irritation had passed.
I then started to play around with the conduit settings for entourage.
1. Disabled them all.
Result: the sync of the other components - went along with no problem
2. Created a new identity in Entourage. Then switched the conduit and told
it to sync the whole thing. (I put in a couple of test vCards, and calendar
events, etc). Result - no problem
3. Then went through each of the setting (Address/Calendar/Task/&Notes) on
the old identity. Testing the sync process with only one of the four above
components on (set to overwrite the palm.
Result
Address - Conduit quit prematurely
Calendar - no problem
Task - no problem
Notes - no problem
4. At this point problem was something in the address book
Action: A) Copied the Database and Cache to the Test identity
B) Started Entourage and switched identities to Test
C) Assigned 3 new categories .Test & .Clear & .Current
Set all the entries to .Test
D) Set the conduit to the Test identity and settings to
ignore sync if category = .Test. Did an initial sync (result = no problem,
no entries in the palm address). Also disable the do this once and set so
that Entourage overwrites Palm.
E) Then split the .Test entires in Entourage in half and
changed there category to .Current. Removed the .Test status on those
entries. Ran Sync, Result = no problem.
F) When and changed .Current entries status to .Clear and
Removed the .Current status. Went back and repeated the cycle.
G) Eventually found a single entry that would crash the sync
process. Checked the entry for any syntax issue (in my case the phone number
for some reason was <email> address. Cut this and pasted to email removed
brackets and changed status to .Test and sync. Result no problem.
H) Result is now I can sync my palm and cause of problem was a
corrupt entry in the address book.
Hope this helps someone, otherwise sorry to bore you.
Cheers Paul.
PS remember correct real identity and trash the test identity (in my cash
the file 1G in size). I would normally have restored from a backup copy,
however that one was also corrupt and and the only long term storage copy
was 1 month ago. To old.
