how do i restore calendar? there were many duplicates in entourage which had come from ical so i deleted the ical calendars & re-sync'd - the settings in entourage were supposed to delete ical & only use the events in entourage. for whatever reason the whole ******* thing is now empty. typically i dont have access to my time machine backup. is there any way to restore? i've just about had it with this product, never hated anything so much.

Well here is the thing: The Entourage identities are not compatible with
Time Machine and might end up getting corrupted through the process.

Here's what I would do:
- backup the current identity
- restore a copy that has the calendar, and export all the events to an
Entourage archive.
- trash the identity you restored and restore the "current" one.
- re-import the Entourage archive you just made to get all the events
back,

You're not alone in your dislike of Entourage. For me, it meets 100%
of my needs but there are serious sync issues with sync services and
things can get easily messed up as in your case. My only issue with
using a Mac at the moment is this whole mess with sync services. What
has happened to you has happened to me plus tons of other stuff so if
you're using Entourage specifically but anything really backups are
critical.

You say you don't have access to a Time Machine backup. Do you or do
you have any other backup as you will need to use it. This thing about
Entourage not being compatible with Time Machine - well, the other day
I noticed suddenly at the beginning of Sept back all Calendar entries
were dup'd. I thought I wonder if that just happened. I was
categorizing. So I went to my previous Time Machine backup of course
turning off sync first and restored my Entourage Main Identity and
there weren't dups. So I resync'd everything. I forgot that I had
restored from a Time Machine backup. I just wanted to determine when
the dups happened and possibly why. At this point I would have gone to
my SuperDuper 3 am backup and restored the identity but I forgot. That
was back at the end of Sept and I've been using this identity since
and its fine and sync is going fine (crossing fingers of course) -
utility reports that identity is fine and I work in entourage
constantly and the identity is fine. So really its up to every
individual to decide on their own backup and restore strategy. I have
multiple backup systems and backups both local and in the cloud.

You need a backup to get your data back. Assuming you have one you
need to restore your main identity. Sync in Snow Leopard has a couple
of issues. The over write command in Entourage doesn't behave properly
now. To sync, delete the Entourage Calendar in iCal and in Entourage
prefs sync when you choose Calendar choose combine. It will then
create an Entourage cal in iCal perfectly sync'd.

I forgot to mention, for the other two modules choose combine. Over
write does work but in Addressbook you will see a new strange behavior
if you use over write and that is entries that are companies will show
in Addressbook as No Name. For some reason, the company isn't ticked
and clicking edit twice will cause the company name to appear. This
applies also if you back up Addressbook to the desktop and restore it
but not if you restore it from Time Machine. I've reported this to
Apple and it is something out of sync services in Snow Leopard.

However, on the positive side, I have been able to sync for a few days
now with all 3 modules turned on without anything going awry yet!
Previously, to sync Entourage I could only have one module turned on
at a time to avoid strange sync outcomes and there are many.

hi Kerry

thanks for the empathy & advice. i do have my TM backups back in China, but no access to them for a week or so. i'll attempt to restore from TM, but to be honest it sounds like i'm likely to encounter hassle & not sure if my contacts are at risk also, as i guess that entourage uses a single monolithic db. to be honest i've really had it with the product and think that i'm going to switch to using ical which although far from meeting requirements, sounds like it could be easier. i'm a first time mac user and really regretting spending my £2.5k on something that has just frustrated the **** out of me for the last 4 months. hey ho. tahnks again and may your problems be few.

Using Time Machine to backup Entourage basics:

It's advised by the developers not to let Time Machine backup your Entourage
database. If the database is copied while being used, the backup could be
corrupt.

You can set the Time Machine to exclude the Microsoft User Data
folder and create an iCal event to copy it over at night while not in use so
you get one backup daily in Time Machine. http://bit.ly/Rhutx

Yeah, no I really do understand and if you're new to the Mac you
probably moved to it expecting a hassle free, fun experience!

Anyway, if you just use iCal and Addressbook they are more reliable in
terms of syncs and very little will go wrong. Many people made that
switch as they couldn't deal with what was going on with Entourage.
They though aren't as powerful as Entourage and aren't intended to be
but they work well and are fast. You will need to restore your info
from your Time Machine backups located in the following spots:

iCal - home user/Library - Just high lite the "calendars" folder in
this location, enter Time Machine and restore the folder from the date
and time you want

Addressbook - home user/Library/application support - high lite the
"addressbook" folder in this location, enter Time Machine and restore
the folder from the date and time you want

The other thing in using iCal and Addressbook is they are very
efficient in the way they back up using little disk space unlike
Entourage's monolithic DB. There's a point where backing up the
Entourage DB in Time Machine if it gets too large and it can get very
large with use thus using way too much disk space and time (review
this forum and you'll be surprised how large some people let their
Entourage DB get to). I tend to keep my active Entourage identity on
the leaner side for this reason and as I said if you do use Entourage
you have to have backups and backups that go back in time. Thus, I use
Data Backup that I have set for rotational 14 day backups and I run
this a 3 am first having the system via Quickeys shut down all open
applications. I also use Crashplan and let this thing backup to the
web just in case something disastrous happened to my local system.
I've found Entourage restores from Crashplan's web servers 100%. You
might want to check this out and it is reviewed a long with others in
this months Macworld and it rates the best. It is constantly running
in background and I never notice its activity but get a backup report
every week indicating backup times etc. This is really an excellent
system and you'd be able to retrieve your backed up stuff no matter
where you are in the world as long as you have access to the web.
Depending on your upload speed, your first backup may take quite some
time if you've chosen a lot to backup. Since its unlimited most of my
home folder is backed up to it except music and Parallels and VMWare
which are both fairly static (and massive in size so there's no way
I'd back these up to the cloud) and are backed up in a safe space a
way from my computer. As I said though, once you've done this first
back up you'll never notice it running. Its not expensive either - $54
for 1 year unlimited or cheaper if you take longer terms.

So, good luck. Oh and one other thing I thought I'd share with you is
I've been using both Mac and PCs for 25 years and for the first time
I've actually thought of just going to a PC once Windows 7 comes out.
I doubt I will but I've sure been thinking about it as the Mac has
been very frustrating around this whole sync services mess, at least
for me, for almost 2 years.
