Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: Exchange

When starting Entourage I get get an error message that says "Entourage can not access your data. To attempt to fix the problem, rebuild your database" Then is launches the database utility. In the database utility I have tried to verify the problem and rebuild the database. I can do either. The process stops during step 1/5 and displays the same error message
"An error occurred while attempting to verify or rebuild you database"

What should I do? At this point I am considering removing and reloading office. SInce I an only using exchange I will not lose my email or calendar. My contacts are synced to apple address book. Does anyone know a better way to fix this problem?

What version of Office 2008 do you have?? Did you update all the way to
12.1.4??

An update - So I removed Mac Office and did a clean install. I still have the same problem and get the same messages. Where is the database stored? Do I need to delete it? If I do, will Office rebuild a new one? Now I am stuck.

Updating rarely fixes problems like this. Did you update Office after the
reinstall?

Location of your data:

In the Microsoft User Data folder you will find the Office 2008 Identities
folder. You can have multiple Identities in this folder. Main is the default
Identity.

~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2008 Identities

If you delete or move your Identity, Entourage will create a new blank one.

If the Identity will open you can salvage your mail. Sometimes a database
will rebuild if you use a very large drive. Before you delete this, we need
more details if you want to try and salvage your data.

I only use exchange- I rarely save mail on my MAC. My contacts are synced to Apple Address Book.

Since almost everything is on the exchange server what is the best way to proceed?

For Exchange accounts create a new Identity and let Entourage sync back up.

You can copy over the Rules and Sig files, but you will have to reset the
folder destinations for each rule.

Thanks for the quick reply - Since I can not open Entourage how do I create
a new identity? Can I do it outside the system? I understand copying the
rules and Sig files. That is not an issue.

Move your Office 2008 Identities folder (Documents > Microsoft User Data)
onto the Desktop and relaunch Entourage. You should now get a whole new
identity.
