entourage cannot access data

I had a crash using Entourage a while back. When I try to start it I get the message that it cannot access my data and I have to rebuild the database. Then I get a message about rebuilding the database, I click OK - it cannot rebuild the data base (including the advanced way) and I get a -40 error. I tried reloading all of Office (I get a framework x library error when starting the other office programs) but I still get the errors. I've tried dragging to the trash all of office but it still does that so there must be something still out there somewhere. I never get to the step where I have to enter the product key, the programs just start, or come up with a fatal error as does entourage.

A further update. I found "Remove Office" on the CD and removed office that way and reinstalled Office X and had to enter the CD key. Entourage still crashes for the reasons listed above. And PowerPoint, Word, and Excel still give the error about the Framework X library but I can still use those programs.

and I get a -40 error.

Error -40 is a positioning error (tried to position before start of file).
This might indicate file system corruption. Try running Apple's Disk
Utility: First Aid and repairing the disk till it shows clean.

Be sure you have backup, your hard drive could fail and you can loose
everything.
And PowerPoint, Word, and Excel still give the error about the Framework X
library but I can still use those programs.

I suspect that since you are using 'end of life' software (Entourage X was
last updated January 9, 2007) on a really old OS (Panther) that your hard
drive could be really fun and due to it's age your drive could be about to
fail.

It's possible if you moved all your data off the drive and ran Disk Utility
on it you could get rid of any bad blocks. Reinstalling the OS then merging
back your data could just add back old problems. I would reinstall
everything.

Maybe Santa will bring you a new drive and updated software. Happy Holidays!
