server fails and times out.

1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

You can try re-entering info.
You can delete account and create a new one.
Using copy/paste can result in an extra space being added. Type carefully.
Check your Keychain for corruption.

I have a Comcast account. Be sure to set the SMTP Advanced settings. Recent
security updates require authentication.

ˆ Override default SMTP port: 587
ˆ SMTP server requires authentication
€ Use the same settings as receiving mail server

See this page for more help setting up your accounts.

Are you sure you have authentication turned on? Under advanced sending
options, select "SMTP server requires authentication".

Then, if you are also using Comcast's POP server (mail.comcast.net) for your
incoming mail, select "Use same settings as receiving mail server".

Otherwise select "Log on using", enter your Comcast account ID and Password
in the text boxes provided, and select "Save password in my Mac OS keychain"
to make sure Entourage remembers the information across sessions.

Diane, FWIW my Comcast account works fine without overriding the default
SMTP port.

This was a new change for me.

I received this from Comcast:

ACTION REQUIRED: Comcast has determined that your computer(s) have been used
to send unsolicited email ("spam"), which is generally an indicator of a
virus. For your own protection and that of other Comcast customers, we have
taken steps to prevent further transmission of spam from your computer(s).

Bull hockey! I know you're not running Windows and no virus for Mac OS X
exists in the wild. I don't know what Comcast thought they saw coming
from your computer but I certainly know they don't either.

I think someone pirated my email and used their PC to send spam. All I know
if they blocked all my email until I made the changes.

I think someone pirated my email and used their PC to send spam. All I know
if they blocked all my email until I made the changes.

I got the same message from Comcast around the same time that Apple upgraded
the .Mac service to MobileMe. I have no idea why, but I had to use the
"override default SMTP port: 587" setting on all my accounts to get things
working again.

I'm guessing Comcast's mail servers have some way to see what ports are
being used for email and they shut you down if they see settings that look
"suspicious" or whatever.

You quoted from their message:
Comcast has determined that your computer(s) have been used
to send unsolicited email ("spam")

If someone pirated your E-mail account (and I'm meaning guessed your
password and actually sent spam your account) then you'd know it. You'd
be getting tons of bounces or seeing similar strange activity. Plus,
they wouldn't see activity coming from your computer(s).

If someone simply used your address as the reply to (a very old spammer
trick) then Comcast certainly didn't see any activity coming from your
computer(s) as they claim above.

Either way, they didn't see *anything* coming from your computer(s).
They did do the *right* thing by requiring authentication but they did
the *wrong* thing by telling you the spam activity was coming from your
part of their network.

They also did this to practically *all* Comcast customers, not just you.

I still say bull hockey.
