Entourage cannot send email

For the second time in two weeks, I get the following message when trying to send email via Entourage: An operation on the server timed out. The server may be down, overloaded, or there may be too much net traffic. I have spent HOURS on the phone with my ISP (Earthlink) and have tried everything they suggested; nothing worked and they tell me now it's an Entourage problem. Why is it so hard to get help?

Do you really think Earthlink is going to admit they have problems and loose
a customer?

If it's working most of the time, it's not Entourage. If it's not working at
all, then we need to look at your settings:

1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

You can try re-entering info.
You can delete account and create a new one.
Using copy/paste can result in an extra space being added. Type carefully.
Check your Keychain for corruption.

Lately, many ISPs upgrade their servers with security updates and this often
requires your settings to be changed for authentication. You should have
been notified if there were changes but some users just don't see the
message in the spam box or their ISP didn't notify anyone. Call or view
their web site and hope they have updated the info there.
