Entourage Crashes on opening

S

Hi, I've reveiwed some previous posts on this, and tried a few of the
suggestions, but haven't gotten any results. I apologize for possibly
rehashing things a bit.

I'm having a problem with Entourage 2004 crashing on launch. This
occured just after I installed the latest security patch for the OS
(2006-11-05 08:44:07 -0800: Installed "Security Update 2006-006
(PowerPC)" (1.0)). I haven't been able to lauch Entourage since.

I've tried moving the plist file, and lauching to rebuild the database
(option), but nothing is working.

1. Short of reinstalling, are there any suggestions?

2. If I need to reinstall, how do I best "uninstall"?

3. Is there any other information that I could supply that would help
diagnose this?
and,

4. I do have a backup, but there may have been a problem during my last
backup. Would there be a particular folder / file that would be best
to restore in a piecemeal attempt?

Help is appreicated.

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again.
Several users have reported this fixed some odd problems they were having
with Entourage.

Usually, crashing at start can be solved by holding the shift key down when
launching Entourage to prevent startup schedules from firing. Turn off the
preview pane and then try to download your mail.

Another thing to check is your Login Items in System Preferences | Accounts|
Login Items. You should only have one Microsoft Database daemon in Startup
Items. If you see more than one Microsoft Database daemon delete them all
and let Entourage recreate a new one. More info

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/glossary/daemon.html>

To test if the problem is your database, create a new User in System
Preferences. See if Entourage launches there with a new blank Identity.

Let us know if this helps.

Dumb question first. I assume I need the client version?

Second, I also seem to be having flash problems that crash firefox, and
according to the update info, flash is involved with this update too,
so it may be related.

I'm at work now, but will try downloading the update

Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know how it's worked.

OK, finally got a chance to try your suggestions.

I'm still on 10.3.9, so I seperately downloaded and reinstalled the
update I listed above

Security Update 2006-006 (PowerPC)" (1.0)

That didn't work.

I tried to start Entourage with the shift key, and still no success.

I deleted the database daemon, with no luck (there still is an AU
daemon, should I delete that?)

(btw, my office notifications, and other office apps still work.)

Finally, I created a new user, and tried to lauch Entourage logged into
the new account. It installed new fonts, but then quit when it got
around to launching Entourage.

So, do I reinstall? Can I just reinstall Entourage only? Do I delete
"E" from the apps folder first...I'd like a little guidance before I
take the next step.

Thanks,
Jeff

oh, the reinstallation of the update did seem to help with a flash
problem I had with my firefox browser.

Just to make sure. You created a new user in System Preferences not a new
Identity in Entourage. It sounds like a problem at the system level, but
trying a re-install of Office isn't too time consuming and is worth a try.

To re-install use "Remove Office" then install Office from your CD. Be sure
to update. If it still fails, then you need to do an Archive and Install of
the OS. Use the combo updaters from Apple to update the OS.

Using "Remove Office"

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/glossary/remove_office.html>
==============
"Archive and Install" moves existing system files to a folder named Previous
System and then installs Mac OS X again.

Just be sure to check Preserve Users and Network Settings when you select
Archive & Install.

If you have any questions about doing the archive & install see the Apple KB

Yes, I treid a new system user.

So far, reinstalling Office hasn't worked. Reinstalling the system is
my task for the weekend.

Should I consider this incentive to upgrade to the current OS?

Thanks,

Leopard isn't that far into the future. If you are planning on updating, you
might want to wait. Doing an Archive and Install over an erase and install
isn't quite so time consuming.

Try repairing permissions.
For OS 10.2+:
Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities. Open up Disk Utility. Select
your hard disk, then click the First Aid tab. Click the button to "Repair
Disk Permissions".

Try repairing permissions.

That was the first thing I tried.

Problem solved after reinstalling the system. Before I did that, I did
manage to verify the database by copying it onto my old G3 and opening
it with Entourage there.

Much less painful than the hard drive crash last year, and why I was so
cautious.

Thanks for your help Diane,

Jeff
