Entourage Crashes When Reading Email

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

Entourage continually crashes when reading email. Entourage is version 12.2.1, Mac OS is 10.5.8, Safari 4.0.3, Firefox 3.5.3
I have a POP account (Comcast) and an IMAP account (Mac.com)
Entourage will crash and close, followed by the do you want to send an error message and so forth. When I read the error message, the offending module varies - some days it is java, some days web core, come days blank. (Unfortunately I do not have a copy of the last message.) I can restart Entourage and read some more emails, and often I get the same message and go thru everything again. When entourage opens, it will open to the account that was NOT in use when the program crashed.

Here is what I have done to this point all to no avail:
1) Rebuilt the data base
2) Set up a new user account, new email address
3) Uninstalled Office 2008 (include permissions, etc), reinstalled, and updated (both auto and combo) Installation was down from different copies of the program purchased from two different sources
4) Wiped and reinstalled OS and all programs on computer from scratch. OS reinstall was from original disks and not a ghost or time machine

After all this, Entourage still crashes so often I am looking at going to iMail.

Any ideas?

I forgot to add in my prior post - I have tried email with only the OS and MS Office 2008 loaded (prior to loading any other programs)

Entourage continually crashes when reading email.

This happened to me and I traced it to a bad font. It would crash when I
clicked only specific e-mails.

Thanx for the inputs. I tried both Diane's and Tim's suggestions and nothing has changed. Will keep plugging.

I also think it might be a font issue. After watching closely,
enduring a few crashes, etc, I had my entourage crash & reopen with
all garbled fonts. I closed it, reopened it and it was fine. I watched
Suitcase Fusion during Entourage's startup and for some reason, it
auto activates ~10 fonts, most of which are Adobe.

I'm going to bet that entourage is crashing because it's either trying
to find a font or there is a font conflict.

Delete these files in ~/Library/Caches:

com.microsoft.browserfont.cache
tasmanbrowser.cache

You might need to delete all font caches especially if you have install Snow
Leopard.

If you have just installed Snow Leopard, you need to deal with the older
versions of Microsoft fonts now installed. For directions see:

_snow_leopard.html>

In case the above link does not work:

BTW, if you disable Suitcase, does the problem go away?

I have tried Diane's steps but don't feel it was the cause. I was getting the crash after a total reinstall of the OS and installation of Office. I don't think the fonts could get corrupted that fast. I haven't gone to Snow Leopard yet as I am using a Palm Tungsten E and would lose the sync with SL. (Another excuse to replace it with an iPod Touch) (too much time left on on my cell phone service). About a week ago, I transferred everything over to Mail and iCal and they have both been rock solid.

For all that have offered suggestions and tried to help, many thanx. I am just going to run with Mail and iCal for now.

I, too, have been having crash issues with Entourage 2008 12.2.1; it quits when I am clicking on messages to read them, and it also quits when I am deleing messages from my inbox, sent box, or deleted box.

The program quits and a pop-up box states "Microsoft Entourage has encountered a problem and needs to close..." The "More Information" button reveals the following code:

Microsoft Error Reporting log version: 2.0

I'm sketchy to go through all the database rebuilding, uninstall, and reinstalls of the software, and possibly the OS, because so many threads have stated that users with similar issues have done the leg work and the problem continued.

I have also read about fonts causing the problem, and it's mentioned in this thread as well. Where would the font be located that is causing the problem? Is it residing within a message?

This sounds like the dreaded webcore/javascriptcore bug that has no known
fix.

The font issue that has been discussed is the conflict with the newer fonts
Snow Leopard installs with the older versions Microsoft installed.

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
if it¹s your User¹s folder that contains the problem.

You can drag your current Identity to Shared folder for access in the new
User. I would first test in the new User with a new blank Identity. If that
works, drag from Shared (it actually copies) your Identity to see if it
works with the Identity.

If the problem exists in a new User in a new Identity, then it's at the
system level. It's either the OS or Office files.

If the problem does not exist in a new User with the new Identity, then the
problem is in your User's folder.

If the problem does not exist in the new User with your old Identity, then
you can eliminate your Identity and test for problems in the old User.
