Entourage crashes when trying to download mail from Gmail

I have traditionally used Entourage 2004 with a POP account, but I've just set it up to download mail from my Gmail account thru IMAP.

I followed Gmail's instructions for setting up the IMAP account in Entourage 2004, but Entourage crashes whenever I try to download mail from my Gmail account.

I have about 2000 Gmail messages to download -- is that a problem?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Connect Entourage 2004 to Gmail¹s IMAP service

Create Gmail labels and make Entourage folders

Thanks, Diane, but that doesn't work. The blog says: "Label mail in your INBOX and then delete those messages from your INBOX. Your messages will still appear under your label."

That is INCORRECT. I tried it as a test on some messages, and it deleted them from the labels too!! Is there a setting I should change?

"Delete" is the wrong wording. "Remove" or "Archive" would have been
better choices.

Was your original problem resolved, though?

No, Entourage still crashes whenever I connect to the Gmail server or try to download messages.

Create a new Identity in Entourage and enter your Gmail account. Does the
problem exist? If yes, then it's your regular Identity that is the problem.
You will either need to rebuild your database or start with a new Identity
and move your data over.
How do I remove/archive messages from my Inbox without deleting them?

From the Gmail Inbox, or the Entourage Inbox?

In Gmail, you can create a folder and move them via the web interface.
In Entourage you can use Rules to move messages or you can manually move
them.

You need to be more specific about what you want to do and where....
Entourage or Gmail web interface.

Diane,

All I want to do is sync my Gmail account with Entourage 2004. Every time I try connecting with that account, it crashes Entourage. I have created a new identity and rebuilt my database, but it still fails every single time I try downloading mail from Gmail.

Move all mail out of the Gmail Inbox. Add back 10 messages. See if Entourage
can download these? Most likely it's a bad message. Usually one of your
oldest messages. If this works and you cannot find the bad message, you will
have to add them back in batches to locate the message.

If you install tcpflow, you might be able to see which message is causing
the problem.

Test your network with tcpflow. See directions here:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/tcpflow.html>

Another application I ran into recently that does the same thing but has a
different interface.

EavesDrop....Let it capture some stuff then double-click any of the lines of
text in the main window to see more detail.

I tried Entourage with GMAIL IMAP and there wasn't a problem but I
didn't have the number of messages you do. I turned it off though for
a couple of reasons. I found that there seemed to a significant load
on Entourage (I also use Fastmail IMAP and this isn't the case).
Secondly, I found that if I deleted a mail item in Inbox and I went to
all mail, it was still there. I prefer just using GMAIL's web
interface and letting their servers do all the work. Oh and I didn't
test it far enough to see how it handled threads. The first two things
kind of turned me off of this approach. Who knows though, I might try
it again as the one thing having the mail in Entourage would be handy
for is a spotlight search. When I do a search and don't find the item,
I have to remember to jump over to Gmail and search there.

Diane,

No luck installing tcpflow or Eavesdrop, but admittedly those things are outside of my comfort zone, as I generally stay away from the Terminal window. I would move the mail out of the Gmail inbox as you suggested, but I don't know how to do that. Any attempts to apply labels and then delete them from the inbox ended up deleting them everywhere. Please clarify.

Thanks.

You need to read Gmail Help to understand how it works. We are here to help
you, but you need to also help yourself by learning how things work.

I suggest you change your Gmail account to POP and see if that works better
for you.

Pop works fine with less load against Entourage. But IMAP will work
also without problem just with my caveats that I noted previously. If
you're used to IMAP, POP won't cut it.
