Entourage crashes with latest office update

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

I just installed the latest office for mac 2008 update (SP2?) Entourage throws up the splash screen then quits with a bug report screen.

I would of course prefer not to have to completely re-install the full mac office suite, and then try again to install the latest update. But if that is necessary, I'd like some seasoned advice on how to uninstall/reinstall appropriately. I need to get my mail back on the Mac and I don't want to lose data, folder setups, rules, etc. My latest backup is fairly old, but I guess time machine is also an option?

Thanks in advance.

Side note: Of course I can't send email using entourage now, so when I registered on mactopia I had to wait for an email and click the link...

I was able to use a pc with outlook to retrieve this mail, but outlook had filtered the mail as junk.

Did you install with all Microsoft applications quit including the hidden
ones?

Did you restart after updating?

Dos and Don'ts for a good install

Check List to troubleshoot your install

I would of course prefer not to have to completely re-install the full mac

necessary, I'd like some seasoned advice on how to uninstall/reinstall
appropriately.

Sometimes tracking down the problem takes more time than doing a reinstall.

Steps to re-install Office

It might not be necessary to use "Remove Office". The steps in the link
above does not require complete removal. However "Remove Office" in Office
2008 does not remove several items including receipts that can make Office
think it's updated when it's not. See

Reinstalling is not supposed to touch your data in the Microsoft User Data
folder, but strange things can happen during any update so backup is always
suggested. You can simply compress (zip) your Main Identity.

~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2008 Identities/Main Identity

Using Time Machine to backup Entourage basics:

It's advised by the developers not to let Time Machine backup your Entourage
database. If the database is copied while being used, the backup could be
corrupt. You can set the Time Machine to exclude the Microsoft User Data
folder and create an iCal event to copy it over at night while not in use so
you get one backup daily in Time Machine.

and_time_machine.html>

Entourage and Time Machine-like backup (creates chronological backup of
Identity can be used by both Tiger and Leopard)
