Entourage crashing

I am experiencing the same problem. I have cleaned the font cache too.
Entourage is intermittently crashing for no apparent reason, and it is
really annoying. It began about three weeks ago.

Did you install the Safari 4 beta around that time? If yes, then use the
uninstaller that came with the installer and remove the beta version. The
final version of Safari seems to be working OK.

Steps to help determine where the problem is located.

1) you can eliminate your Identity by creating a new Identity in Entourage
and see if you experience the same problem.

2) if a new Identity still exhibits the same issues, then create a new User
in System Preferences and test Entourage there.

3) If the problems still exist in the new User, it's a problem with your
Office install or your base OS files. If running the Apple combo does not
fix, then you might need to do an "Archive & Install". Rarely does
re-installing Office fix issues.

Diane, the release version of Safari 4 came out last week. I have installed
it and it doesn't seem to conflict with E 2004. Do you know if it has
problems with E 2008?

I am running Firefox, not Safari, and I frankly do not intend to spend an
entire day creating new identities and users and reinstalling my OS simply
to troubleshoot Entourage!

The problem began, as another user reported, about three weeks ago (about
the same time as the Office update prior to the last one) and occurs when
deleting emails, that much I can tell you. Entourage will occasionally crash
(like every tenth time) after clicking "delete" while in the Inbox. A
message then pops up that Entourage is sending a crash report to MS, but
I've only seen it actually transmit anything one time.

Perhaps knowing that the problem only occurs when deleting an email in the
Inbox will give you a clue as to what's happening?

It could be database corruption. You can try rebuilding your database.

How to rebuild:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/database/rebuild.html>

Make a duplicate in the Finder first as additional backup. A rebuild does
make a duplicate, but sometimes in the process the original and backup get
merged resulting in total disaster. It's rare but it happens.

Hi Diane,

So, i did the combo patch and that did not work. I still had the problem. However, after that, i added a new user and when i did that and hooked up entourage to that account, it appeared as if it was not crashing anymore.

So, that being said, is there a way to fix the main user? If so, let me know.

Again, thanks for all your help with this...we are getting close!

It's a bit time consuming so work through the process. I've seen strange
cases where preference files that had no connection to Entourage cause the
problem. If it's a font issue, it's most likely a cache problems since all
users share the same fonts in root Library/Fonts.

appropriate steps to correct the problem.

I have the final version of Safari installed. NOT the beta.

It might be time to do an "Archive & Install" then. It's not too bad. The
last time I had to do one, the only application I had to reinstall was my
Microsoft keyboard software.

Archive and Install

1) Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X
icon.

2) Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select the
destination disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will
be the only one available).

3) Click Options. If you want to save your existing files, users, and
network settings, select ³Archive and Install,² and then select ³Preserve
Users and Network Settings.² If you want to erase everything on your
computer and reinstall Mac OS X, select ³Erase and Install.² You can¹t
recover erased data.

4) Click Continue.

5) Click Customize to select which parts of Mac OS X you¹d like to install,
or click Install to perform a basic installation (recommended).

Once the install has finished, your system will be at whatever level the
disk you have is. So if your Install DVD/CD disk is 10.5.0, that's what
version of OS will be on your Mac. You will need to download the appropriate
Combo Updater from Apple's site to restore the system to a higher version.
After you run the combo, allow Software Update to download and install any
additional updates.
