Entourage Database Recurring Errors

I keep getting "Unknown Error 4362" in Entourage which seems to be generated by a variety of actions including trying to delete mail, trying to send and trying to read received mail. Entourage will also not allow me to archive.

I had a similar, but less severe, problem about 3 weeks ago and rebuilt the database. This temporarily cured the problem but now it's back and it's worse.

My questions are:
a) Is there something more fundamental that I should address eg. is there a maximum recommended Entourage mailbox/database size (ie do I have too many emails stored?)?

b) Can someone remind me how to rebuild the database?

Many thanks.

Rebuilding does not always fix the corruption. When this happens, you need
to manually move your data into a new Identity. As long as you have an
Identity that will open you can salvage your data.

How to manually move your data. (when import fails and/or you need to move
to a new Identity same version or revert to an older version)

Before we start this you need to consider the health of your hard drive. How
full is your drive? Have you run Disk Repair and Repair Permissions from
Disk Utility? Do you have Disk Warrior?

What size is your database?
b) Can someone remind me how to rebuild the database?

Hi Diane

Many thanks for your very comprehensive response.

I suspected that the issue might in fact lie with the available space on my hard disk - only 3GB. Admittedly I haven't had any problems with any of the other applications I use but nevertheless the Entourage database is significantly large at just over 900MB. Is there a recommended maximum size to ensure that the software performs at an optimum level?

I will do as you suggested and clean up my hard disk etc, rebuild the database again and as a last resort move to a new identity.

Thanks again.

You need a minimum of 10% for free space. I suspect you will find after you
do some clean up that you will feel like you have a new computer.

This is small even by Entourage X standards. When you get over 10GB then
that's large.

Size Limits of Database

Hope this helps!
