Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC
Email Client: pop

On my G4 Powerbook i changed from Office 2004 to 2008.
All apps but entourage work, though there is always this message:
(translated from german:)
Access to data impossible. Problem may be solved by creating a new database

But there is no database found in the following window wit the database-help-app. Identity & last change are blank.

Entourage does not start after displaying this message.
(I want to have all my contacts & mails from Office2004 transferred to Office2008)

Check the permissions on the Microsoft User Data folder in your Documents
directory, and on the actual Microsoft Office 2008 folder in /Applications.
If you haven't run the 12.0.1 update, they're probably fubar'd

Another user just reported this worked. NOTE for anyone following along this
DELETES your mail.

1- Deleted "Microsoft User Data" folder under Documents
2- Deleted all com.microsoft.* under ~/Library/Preferences
3- Deleted Microsoft folder under ~/Library/Preferences

I then re-ran Office Setup Assistant, and problem solved.

Diane,

I am running Entourage 2004 with Tiger 10.4 and Entourage just quit working
today. I get the Inbox email list, but can't select anything, not even quit
from the application.

Your solution sounds kind of drastic (losing my email), is there anything
else I could try?

I can't find the Office Setup assistant either.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

It's best not to hijack another thread. Always start a fresh thread when you
have a problem.

You are trying to apply a solution to a similar problem. Not always
advisable.

What version Mac OS X are you running? 10.4 What????

What version Microsoft Entourage are you using? Including update if any. You
mention Entourage 2004, but what update?

As long as Entourage opens, you can salvage data. Immediately make a backup
copy before doing anything else.

"just quit working" but it opens. This is not a normal symptom of database
corruption. We need to look at your environment and determine where the
problem is located.

1. If you create a new Identity in Entourage, does it work as expected? If
yes, then this indicates your database. Rebuild your database. If no, then
this indicates your User's folder. Go to System Preferences --> Create a New
User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User
Switching. Test Entourage there.

2. If it works in the new User, then the problem is in your User's folder.
If not, then it's system wide. Install the combo updater from Apple.

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files Combo updaters will install on the same version as
they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.
