Entourage Emails - Backing up and Removing Duplicates

L

Lynn Quinlan

Hi there,

I've just imported a huge amount of messages into Entourage. I read through
the posts here and see that Exporting to MBOX is one way of backing up
e-mails. Is there a limitation on file size for this?

Also, is there a storage file size limit for Entourage for all the mail
folders stored on the computer?

As to removing duplicates I downloaded one (Remove_duplicatamsgs, 11.3 kb).
Now as I'm new to Macs (iMac Intel Duo) what do I do next? I am unfamiliar
with how to use this utility so that I can go through each folder (my
preference) and get rid of all the duplicates.

Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Lynn,

As far as I know, there isn't.
Also, is there a storage file size limit for Entourage for all the mail
folders stored on the computer?

Yes, there is.

From the Entourage Help Page
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/database/size.html>

The Entourage 2004 database has no size limit, just a limit to the number of
items in the Entourage database: 2 million database items.

Note: Database items, not Entourage objects (such as messages, contacts,
events, etc.). Dave Cortright, Entourage developer, explains it this way: An
email or news message is actually TWO database items, and for anyone with
near a million Entourage objects (messages, contacts, events, etc.), they
will almost all be messages - the other stuff will be "loose change". So the
limit is effectively just under 1 million messages. Entourage will notify
you if you ever approach the limit
As to removing duplicates I downloaded one (Remove_duplicatamsgs, 11.3 kb).
Now as I'm new to Macs (iMac Intel Duo) what do I do next? I am unfamiliar
with how to use this utility so that I can go through each folder (my
preference) and get rid of all the duplicates.

Move the script into ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Entourage Script Menu
Items. Switch back to Entourage and click on the black scroll icon next to
the Help entry in the menu bar. I've never used the script before, so I
can't really tell you what to do next; doesn't the script come with a readme
file?
