Entourage hangs on downloading email from server

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Email Client: pop Suddenly, it connects to the server and shows that it has 5 messages to download, but it just hangs there. I've checked the list of messages on the service and none have large attachments; I've even deleted them all. . still nothing.
