Entourage Hangs Up, Runs Slow, Gets Spinning Wheel

I'm running Office 2004 on a Mac G5 with OSX. For about a month
Entourage has been hanging up and running slow. I get the spinning
color wheel for about ten seconds before it opens an e-mail, in the
middle of typing an e-mail, when attaching files, etc. Entourage has
never been super fast but for the first few moths I never got the
spinning wheel. I've reinstalled over the top of it and have trashed
the preferences but still get the spinning wheel. I haven't unistalled
it yet to do a clean reinstall because it takes so long to rebuild
everything. Anyone else have this problem and a solution? Thanks.

Same problem here, but only on a few Macs. We have installed E2004 on
over 100 Macintosh systems (of varying vintages) and some of them
display this baffling behaviour.

Things that we've tried include:

Increasing the time between automatic send/receive of mail.

Disabling Norton Antivirus Autoprotect

Following a more rigorous troubleshooting regime is up next... though
frankly, just reinstalling/reimaging the Mac at hand seems to fix the
issue too. While I'd like to understand this problem, I don't have a
lot of time to chase down every possibility.
