Entourage, Hotmail and Deleting Items

O

OCJeff

Hi all. I've dealt the the Hotmail POP3 fiasco in a fashion that is
acceptable. However, now when I delete a message in Entourage, it
does NOT delete it from the server.

I have already checked and I have the appropriate box ticked (Delete
messages on the server when deleted from this computer). However,
when I log into Hotmail from a browser (as I do from work), the
messages that I have so diligently deleted one-by-one in Entourage are
still sitting there.

Any suggestions on how to remedy this most annoying (though not work-
stopping) problem.

Thanks-

Jeff

BTW - I find this also happens with my iPhone. When I delete messages
from my Hotmail Inbox on the iPhone, they do not get deleted in the
actual Inbox.

Again - any help is appreciated.

POP accounts by default will delete from server when downloaded, but there
is an option in Accounts under the Option tab that allows you to keep on
server. You probably have this checked.

Using POP to access mail on multiple devices is problematic. I suggest you
get a Gmail IMAP account and you'll have all the same functionality you
enjoyed before the change over.

Yes - there is an option to leave a copy of messages on the server
(which I do have checked) and just below that option is the option
that says "delete messages from the server when deleted from this
computer" which I also have checked. It would appear that Entourage
is ignoring this option? In Outlook, I could delete items from my
computer and the next time there was a send/receive the items I had
deleted were removed from the inbox. I assumed that Entourage would
work the same way. Is that not so?

I understand the issue with POP3 vs IMAP - but I've had the same e-
mail address for almost 15 years and I don't want to switch.

Are you deleting fully or just putting in Deleted Items folder? You need to
nuke the message. Items in Deleted Items folder are still considered to be
on your computer. There is a script that will do that for you.

You might try forwarding your address through a Gmail account. I can
certainly understand wanting to keep a longtime email address. It's too bad,
Microsoft doesn't give the option for IMAP like Gmail does.

Another good IMAP provider is Fastmail. Again, you would need to forward
your Hotmail on to them, but you could over time phase it out.

Wow - hadn't thought of that. I can't seem to just empty Deleted
Items; Entourage doesn't appear to be as friendly as Outlook (and that
is saying something...)

I ran the script - but I got an AppleScript error: "Microsoft
Entourage got an error: Can't get subject of incoming message id
1130."

Any idea what that means or how to get around this?

On that front - how does this script work? I need to run it everytime
I am working on e-mail or do I need to only execute it once? Once for
each time I start Entourage or once - ever?

Sorry to be slow on this and I do appreciate your help. Have finally
made the decision to move from my 6 year old PC and Outlook to the
nifty iMac we have - and this is a whole new learning experience.

Were you running from the Script Editor?

Read your email, then nuke it while it is selected. For my spam folder, I
scan for good mail, then select all and run nuke.

Nuke has no undo. There is no changing your mind like deleting a message.

Scripts are really great in Entourage. You can do so much to customize
Entourage with a script. You'll find tons ready made and most are free.

Place the script in the Script Menu Items folder in the Microsoft User Data
folder in Documents.

Then you can either select the script from the script menu or use the
shortcut assigned.

Option-Control-D.

I have a Schedule that runs on exit from Entourage (and every two days in
case I don't exit) to delete items from a number of folders, including
Deleted Items. You might try something like that. Schedules are very easy to
set up.
