Entourage HP Laserjet 5000 fatal error 79.00FE

W

Walt W Whitman

We are running four Macs (two on OS 10.3.2 and two on OS 10.2.8). When
trying to print emails from Entourage onto our HP Laserjet 5000 printer
(equipped with a JetDirect 600N for network printing), all machines were
causing a fatal crash of the printer every time.

The error message on the printer's LCD was 79.00FE. The only way to recover
from the crash was to cycle the power on the printer. No other applications
seemed effected by the problem.

A call to Microsoft tech support boosted me in a direction that eventually
led me to the following solution:

1) Go to HP's website and download the latest version of their "hp
LaserJet monochrome printing software and utility" which can be found at:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?loc
ale=en_US&lang=English+%28US%29&pnameOID=14945&prodSeriesId=25473&prodTypeId
=18972&basePartNum=lj609&locBasepartNum=lj-5646-6&os=Mac+OS+X&tech=Driver

2) Download and install this software. If you already have hp drivers, you
may want to custom install only the Classic (OS9) application called "HP
LaserJet Utility" (currently at version 4.5).

3) Run "HP LaserJet Utility" and rename your printer something simple --
no spaces or special characters (I used "HP5000").

4) Go to the CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) website at:

http://127.0.0.1:631/

This site is well worth the visit anyway.

5) Click on the "Printers" link in the navigation bar at the top of the
screen. You will see a list of all the printers from your Print Center.

6) Find your HP 5000 printer in the list and click on the "Modify
Printer" button.

7) Accept the printer name by clicking on "Continue."

8) Select and accept "Appletalk Printer Access Protocol (pap)" by clicking
on "Continue."

9) Accept the Device URI ("pap://*/HP5000/LaserWriter") by clicking on
"Continue."

10) in the "Model Driver Make" choice select "HP" and accept by clicking
on "Continue."

11) Scroll in the list of available drivers and find the one titled "HP
Laserjet Series CUPS v 1.1 (en)" select it and accept the choice by clicking
on "Continue."

If your experience is like mine you should be off and running.

Good Luck!
