I have upgraded from office X (dues to april fool 1412 problem) to
office 2004. entourage 2004 is now importing my old emails intot he
new inbox. and its taking a very long time indeed... i have 2000 more
to come in and it take about 1 min to import a small file of about
13k. so it will take about 2/3 days to import everything. and then
when its finished i will have to wait 30 mins each day for my email
to come in... thats not possible. so whats the problem? how can i
solve it?

i have a dual 1.25 ghz power pc G4 mac

I suggest getting more RAM. I have a G4 Dual 1.42 GHZ, with 2GB. I think
you'll find a remarkable difference by adding more RAM. Might make the
difference in thinking you need to buy a new computer.
running os x 10.4.6

You need to update your OS to 10.4.9. I suggest running the combo updater
rather than the incremental update.

This is NOT normal.

Are the files on the same volume? If I remember correctly, there is a change
to the file, but nothing like what you are experiencing.

How large is your database?

I would stop the import process and do a partial transfer to get you
started.

In Entourage X, export your Address Book as a tab delimited file. Then
create a custom view for all of your mail received during the last 90 days.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/database/archive.html>

Drag the custom view folder to the desktop. Drag your entire Sent folder
to the desktop.

Open Entourage 2004, Create a new Identity. Don't select to import from
another application. Under File select to import your tab delimited file.
Then drag in your MBOX files.

You'll need to recreate your rules, but you will have the basics in a stable
environment.

See the Entourage 2004 FAQs too for help during the transition:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq/2004.html>

We'll work on getting your other mail transferred over, but hopefully this
will get you started.

thanks for the advice.
i have now updated my OS to 10.4.9
but this in itself had not sped up the problem
what i do not understand is that all other things being equal
entourage x works relativley quickly (and its still installend and
working apart from sending messages) but entourage2004 is so much
slower. does the new software require more ram?
thanks

I didn't expect it would. Just pointing out a basic that needed attention.

I just checked system requirements and they are the same.

Memory: 256 MB of RAM

Just running the OS takes *At least* 256MB of physical RAM. So add the OS
plus Office along with any other applications that you have open and you can
see where having additional RAM would be beneficial.

It's been a while since I made the transition, but I remember 2004 as being
faster than X. I would look at other possible causes. Since you have
duplicate copies of Office right now that's taking up more hd space. Then
you have duplicate Identity folders.... More space used up. It could be time
has taken a toll and your hd is now full and fragmented.

Problems from Insufficient RAM and Free Hard Disk Space

Options in Entourage that can improve performance:

ance>

You could eliminate Entourage 2004, by testing it in a new Identity. If a
blank Identity is sluggish, then I would look else where for the source.
