Entourage is Blank...

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I just upgraded my Office (home and Student Edition) to Office:Mac 2008 for eventual use of an exchange server (but not yet). After the upgrade Entourage was blank. I switched identities, nothing, I verified database, it is fine, and I am about to jump off a bridge... Please help -- I just cannot believe that Microsoft would release a logical upgrade that destroyed the e-mail in the previous version! Am I missing something?

The upgrade does not destroy your old database. The instructions ("How to
install") on the download page tell you that you need to import your old
database into Entourage EWS. In other words, once Entourage is open, click
on File>Import and choose the option called "Entourage information from an
archive or an earlier version". Does that solve your problem?

By the way, you will not be able to use Exchange accounts with the Home &
Student edition; you will need either the Standard or Special Media Edition
to do so. Even the switch to the newly released EWS won't change anything
about this.

I agree with your post -- however; I did try to import this information -- it is asking for a .rge file. I do not have one. In the folders where I find the databases there is no .rge file.

Please Advise...

Select to import from "Entourage information from an archive or earlier
version"...click the arrow....select Entourage 2004 (or whatever your
earlier version is)

Have you done any housecleaning recently? Entourage looks for your mail
Database to be in one location only:

/Users/your account/Documents/Microsoft User Data/
Office 2008 Identities/Main Identity/

"Main Identity" can be renamed to something else, however, if you've
changed any other part of the path or deleted any of these folders or
the Database file itself then you need to put things back in place.

Search for your Database on your drive. It will usually be a huge file
(a few hundred MB or maybe even GB in size).

Hope this helps!

There's also an option for Entourage 2008.

Bill,

I had not done anything really in the way of housekeeping -- except for being confused about which identity was which… You see I upgraded from Home and Student TO Office:Mac so I could use exchange at some point. In trying to make sure I had a good and verified database I did a "Database Verify". Being the careful developer that I am I did back up the existing DB and it (Entourage) created a dated backup. I became confused for the reason that I have been trying to use the named-and-dated backup as my identity. While reading your post I decided to try using the Main Identity and all came back to me...

I am thrilled to have overlooked this detail and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Often times when reaching for the stars one stumbles on a simple piece of straw; I appreciate the clarity and the solution!

Kind Regards,

- M
