Entourage not sending or receiving

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Question 1: I have 3 different email accounts on Entourage 2004. Two of my accounts are working fine, although they always run slow. One account stopped working 10 days ago. It crashed after getting hung up trying to deliver 5 emails. None of those emails had large attachments. I have since deleted the problem emails from the Outbox but this particular account still won't receive or send emails. When I try to send an email I get this message or similar: "An unknown error (170) occurred." There is no other explanation or link to fix the problem.

Question 2: What does it mean to empty the cache and do I ever want to do that?

Question 3: What may account for my Entourage running so slowly? For example, sometimes incoming emails don't show up for an hour or so after they were sent.

Question 4: How do I know when my Entourage accounts are getting too large. Could that be slowing things down?

Thank you!

Question 1: I have 3 different email accounts on Entourage 2004. Two of my
accounts are working fine, although they always run slow. One account stopped
working 10 days ago. It crashed after getting hung up trying to deliver 5
emails. None of those emails had large attachments. I have since deleted the
problem emails from the Outbox but this particular account still won't receive
or send emails. When I try to send an email I get this message or similar: "An
unknown error (170) occurred." There is no other explanation or link to fix
the problem.

What type of account had the problem? (POP, IMAP, Exchange)

If you only have IMAP account, I would create a new Identity and let
Entourage sync back up.
Question 2: What does it mean to empty the cache and do I ever want to do
that?

Cache files are temporary files used by an application. Sometimes clearing
cache files will solve problems. Sometimes font cache files become corrupted
and you'll see gibberish. IMAP cache can sometimes reset and allow your
account to refresh.
Question 3: What may account for my Entourage running so slowly? For example,
sometimes incoming emails don't show up for an hour or so after they were
sent.

Entourage receives your pop and IMAP messages with a schedule you set. If
they are on the server, Entourage will download them. It sounds like your
IMAP server might be a bit slow.
Question 4: How do I know when my Entourage accounts are getting too large.
Could that be slowing things down?

Yes, but other things can as well. See this page for help:
