Entourage (Office 2008) hangs while loading on Mac

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

I've uninstalled Office 2008 and re-installed it several times, while removing "com.microsoft.Entourage.plist" from the Prefs folder to see if it helps with the email app. I've also performed a 'hardware test' with 'no problems found'. No joy as yet to get Entourage to load.

From the CD, I've performed a full install and upgraded the software using all the upgrades via the auto update Microsoft Updater (all in order) to bring the Microsoft Office version to 12.1.2.

Word also takes a very long time to load.

Is anyone else having the same problems?
Please help, as I am having to access email through the 'back door' via the browser.

Cheers,
Gaz

How long does it take for Entourage to load? Test in a new User to see if
there is a difference. Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in
Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User
Switching. Test Office applications load time there.

See this link for help with Office 2008 applications slow to load:

Office 2008 slow to launch

Let me know if these options help.

Gaz, how much RAM do you have? How much free space on your startup disk?

Have you tried running Activity Monitor from the Utilities folder while
launching Office apps to see how much CPU and RAM these (and other) apps may
be using?

Hi Diane,
thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately, I can't test Entourage because it fails to launch. I'm just left with the 'purple dialog box' for the app. When it did launch in the beginning it was taking approx 120 - 140sec to load.

I'll try setting up a new user and do what you say.
Let you know how I get on.
Many thanks,
Gaz

Thanks Ed,
I have 2GB of RAM. I've checked to see if both chips are seated securely and correctly (one in each board - A/DIMM 1 and B/DIMM 1). All seems fine and is picked up on Memory status (Apple > about this mac)

Taking on board your comment ,I launched Entourage whilst looking at the activity monitor, results are as follows;

Real Memory size: 115.18MB
Virtual Memory Size: 1.18GB
Shared Memory: 0
Private Memory: 0
Virtual Private Memory: 0

VM Size: 33.64GB
Page ins: 159.56MB
Page outs: 0
Swap used: 0

CPU (percent) 68.32

What do you make of this?
I'm sorry, it means nothing to me.

Entourage's apparent use of 68.32% of available CPU capacity seems quite
high and may well be related. I was also interested in total memory use (not
just Entourage). You can see this by clicking the System Memory button near
the bottom of the Activity Monitor Window.

Do you have Safari running while you are trying to launch Entourage? I have
observed that Safari is a real memory hog, using roughly 25% of my 2GB of
RAM, much more than any other app. If so, you could try quitting Safari and
launching Entourage to see if that helps.

How big is your Entourage database (~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office
2008 Identities/Main Identity/Database)?
